Top 100 Fitness Foods 100 Ways To Turboc
by
Sarah Owen

, February 15, 2010
This is a handy-sized ( 6.8 x 5.6 x 0.7 inches) little book that you’ll find yourself referring to over and over. It’s the perfect size to keep in your purse, gym bag or briefcase. For those of you who want to kick up your exercise routine through optimized nutrition this is perfect. But for those of you like me who are just really getting started and want a something that will help you just choose foods that are better choices…this book is wonderful. Since we can’t just quit eating food, we need to choose foods that work better for us and we can’t do that unless we have a better idea how foods work. Eating the right foods can have a huge impact on your stamina and performance, but choosing the correct foods can be mentally exhausting and challenging. This little book is packed with profiles of ingredients so that you can make your best choices. The book is color-coded to make finding the foods you need easier. Each section has information like lists of nutrients, at-a-glance symbols, and it gives you tips to incorporate these foods into your diet. There is even a simple recipe included with each ingredient. They’ve also included an ailment list at the back of the book and lists of foods that might help with each one. The photography is gorgeous and the information is priceless. This is one of those staples of reference books that you’ll be really glad to have on hand as you’re planning meals and as you’re shopping. Thanks to Sterling Publishing for providing me with a copy of this book to read and review. I receive no payment for my reviews and the opinions are entirely my own.

Brides of Gallatin County #3: A Dream to Call My Own (Large Print)
by
Tracie Peterson

, January 24, 2010
I hadn't read the other two books in the series before I read this one, but that really didn't matter. This book was absolutely delightful and I really enjoyed it. The characters and plot were fun and believable, which isn't always the case with Christian fiction. I think anyone could pick up this book and enjoy it. I'd heartily recommend this book and I'm planning on checking out the rest of the series as well as some other books by Tracie Peterson. While this is Christian fiction, and Christianity plays an important part in the story, I didn't feel like the author was hitting the reader over the head with it. This could make it an excellent choice for the reader who just wants a nice love story without it being x rated. Thanks to Bethany House for sending me a copy of this great book to review!

Second Half Adventure Dont Just Retire Use Your Time Skills & Resources to Change the World
by
Kay Marshall Strom

I loved this book! I've been really searching for what I'm to do with my time and energy since I am back at home and this book gave me some excellent ideas! Many of you know that I've been in the nursing home for the past two years and have recently moved back out into the world, after some life changing events. I've been struggling to not just fill my time, but to fill my time with something of substance. This book was an eye opener as to how many opportunities there are for those who are entering the 'second-half' of our lives. While the book is definitely written from a Christian perspective, there are any number of activities that would appeal to anyone looking for a way to go out and change the world even in a small way. I've already gone to The Finishers Project and filled out the questionair and I encourage all of you to do the same. We all have skills and passions that could be put to use in ways we can't imagine! Please consider this book as a gift to everyone you know that is approaching that 'second-half' of their life...and even those who have been in it for a time. It would also make a wonderful addition to the library of every Pastor, both for himself and to aid in counseling others. This is a great resource for planning your 'second-half adventure'!

Extreme Dreams Depend On Teams
by
Pat Williams
marta
, September 09, 2009
This book was at the same time inspirational, motivational and just plain fun to read. As an NBA fan I loved reading all Mr. Williams stories about basketball as they fit into his theme of team building - there isn't a sports fan around who wouldn't love this book simply from that aspect. But I also loved reading this book because it's inspirational. It can be applied to everyday life. Mr. Williams message of dreaming extreme and then putting together the team to do that can be used in almost any situation. Whether it's starting a new business, developing a winning sports team, or building a beatiful house, Mr. Williams advice carries through. Dream big and then lay the groundwork and gather the people around you to make that dream come true. Personally, I'm at a point in my life where I'm making some big decisions, and I've started applying some of the ideas from Extreme Dreams Depend on Teams. I'm starting by gathering the people who I need to help me achieve that goal. I'm taking the time and doing the planning and then it will happen. I'd recommend this book to everyone even if just for the sports stories, because I can almost guarantee that anyone who reads this will walk away a bit more inspired and motivated.

Empowered Autism Parenting: Celebrating (and Defending) Your Child's Place in the World
by
William Stillman
marta
, September 06, 2009
Hooray! Hooray! Finally a book that offers real hope and resources for parents of Autistic children to understand what their child is experiencing, and to make life for themselves and their child easier to manage. Mr. Stillman speaks from experience as a person living with Asperger's Syndrome and as an advocate for those on the spectrum who can't speak for themselves. An expert and passionate advocate for those with autism, William Stillman has written a commonsense guide for parenting children with autism. He believes that by giving those around the autistic child the information that they need to recognize their child's unique personality, will help liberate them from the culture of fear and the stigma so prevalent in our society. He demonstrates why the current methods that are used don't tend to work, and offers a ten-step guide for a better, more fulfilling relationship with children with autism. By believing that they are essentially competent to handle tasks, their lives are enriched and so are the lives of those around them. Many times parents, teachers and well meaning friends and family have many misconceptions about what autism is, as well as what life for and with an autistic child will be. Instead, people with autism are intelligent, insightful and can participate in life to the fullest. This book helps to dispel the myths and offer parents real-world insight. This book will help you understand where your child is on the spectrum and how you can best help him to be the best he or she can be. He debunks the myths of high priced medications and therapies and offers real-life ideas on how best to help your child. He also offers a section in the back of the book with tools for helping to manage your child's illness: A prescription medication questionaire, pain and discomfort inventory and a Sensory Sensitivity Inventory. He's also listed websites, books and DVD's that might be useful. This is an awesome resource for parents, teachers, grandparents and anyone who has someone with autism in their life. This book will encourage and uplift and help you to advocate for them. As the tagline of the book says - "Celebrating (and Defending Your Child's Place in the World"

My Story Bible: 66 Favorite Stories
by
Jan Godfrey and Paola Bertolini Grudina

, September 06, 2009
This is just the sweetest book! I was blown away by the artwork in it. This will definitely appeal to your young children and would be the perfect bedtime story book. The stories are short with excellent pictures with it - just the right length to hold your child's attention. The book is hardcover and very durable, and should be able to withstand the attention of even small children. The sturdy pages and the hard cover are made to last. It's very suitable for gift giving, or just to keep for your own family. Each story has accompanying artwork that is very cute that will hold your child's interest. There are 66 stories that are in order from Genesis to Revelations and are written in an easy to read and understand manner - which is perfect for young children. this book offers a wonderful opportunity to share God's Word with your child or with those you gift with this book. Your children will enjoy hearing these stories over and over and have a repetitive style that will make them easy to remember. Personally, I have a granddaughter about to be born and I think this would make the perfect baby gift. It's never to early to start reading them these stories and making them familiar with God's Word.

He Cares NT with Psalms & Proverbs-NLT: Pray for the Cure (Ministry Template - NT Nltse)
by
Lynn Eib
marta
, September 06, 2009
I've really appreciated this version since I've had it. This translation is very clear - easy to comprehend for most people. The chapters are in sections based on different ideas and events which helps a great deal with understanding what you're reading. One of the better features is that it's fairly lightweight and easy to take with you. I did find myself wishing that it was hard bound, just because it will take a lot more punishment, especially if you are carrying it with you a lot, but I guess a Bible cover would help with that also. Lynn Eib, who wrote the introduction, side notes and pages in between each book is a cancer survivor. Her style of writing is very down to earth and she doesn't offer up any trite words of comfort. Everyone who has dealt with cancer or any other long term illness knows what I'm talking about. She offers her own personal story and encouragements that make the book much more personal. She also does an excellent job of making the passages much more understandable. I personally have a chronic disease and I found the words of encouragement very helpful in getting through the down times. I was recently hospitalized and brought it along with me and found great comfort in it. I'll be recommending this to others in the same situation. While the book is focused on comforting people going through an illness, and it is excellent encouragement for those with cancer and also their caregivers, the words of advice and encouragement can be applied to almost any difficult life situation. I'd really recommend this for personal study and encouragement, and I'd also recommend this as a gift for a friend going through a difficult illness.

The Justice Game
by
Randy Singer
marta
, September 06, 2009
This latest book by Randy Singer was inspired by real events that took place which made it a bit more interesting than your average legal thriller. Add to that the fact that he had readers vote for the verdict and then went with the majority and you have a book that proves to be very interesting. Singer is kind of the Christian genre's version of John Grisham and his books are just as suspenseful. I liked this book once I got into it, it started off with a bang and then kind of stalled a bit for me. Once it got going again though it was one that I had a hard time putting down. I do have to say that I was trying to read this on a flight to California, so I may have been more distracted through some of it than the average reader so that might be why I had trouble. For the majority of the book it was really an excellent book. The book focuses on the issue of gun control and Singer does an excellent job of laying out both sides of the issue. I think readers will really find this a fun, exciting, suspenseful read well worth their time.

The Neck Pain Handbook: Your Guide to Understanding and Treating Neck Pain
by
Grant Cooper and Alex Visco
marta
, September 05, 2009
This book is a great introduction to neck pain both it's causes and some simple exercises that can help alleviate it. It's written by two doctors which to me makes it seem a little more credible than some other books that have been out in the marketplace. It's written so that it's easily understood by the average person and contains some easy to understand charts and pictures. The chapter about the neck had some excellent illustrations to help you understand how the neck works. It also had some excellent pictures in following chapters to demonstrate bad posture positions and also examples of simple exercises you can do to alleviate the problem. This book is targeted for those people who have chronic neck pain that is caused by poor posture and a lack of exercise, but there are sections that are devoted to other types of neck pain (such as those stemming from injuries) but they are very brief. While they did discuss the importance of seeking medical treatment for certain symptoms, I was impressed that they also included a section on alternative treatments for the problem. This book was a pretty quick read but I felt was very imformative. It has some great exercises, charts, diagrams and photographs and as someone who has suffered from neck and back pain for years it gave me some ideas on how I could treat and possibly prevent some of what I've been dealing with.

Stray Affections
by
Charlene Baumbich
marta
, September 05, 2009
This book was a sweet, nice read. It was interesting watching the characters change during the course of the story and it was a gentle reminder to readers of the kinds of misunderstandings we can have about the people in our lives. This was a book about relationships and how easily they can become messed up through not communicating with each other. I'm not sure that I absolutely loved this book. It was a little too sweet for me. I also thought that is was a tad corny at times. But if you're looking for a nice story that doesn't involve violence, sex or a lot of cursing then this is a gem that you won't want to miss. This book definitely carried a strong Christian message about forgiveness, love, faith and prayer. All in all it was a nice book and would be perfectly suitable for younger readers also.

Day The Falls Stood Still
by
Cathy Mari Buchanan
marta
, September 05, 2009
Review This book is simply outstanding! This novel is about the love story of Bess and Tom and it could have ended there. Instead Buchanan weaves in the history of Niagara Falls and takes us on a journey that is half historical fiction and half factual. The river and falls themselves take on a life in this wonderful book until they are just as much a character as Bess and Tom. What really caught my attention is this unusual setting. I'm not sure that I've ever read a novel that centered around Niagara Falls in such a way. It was thoroughly enjoyable and unique. The author explores the history of the beginnings of hydroelectric power at the Falls as well as the environmental impact of dams on the Falls. This is a novel of faith, love and following your heart and I loved this book and heartily recommend it to anyone who's looking for a well rounded novel to spend some time with. This was the author's debut novel and I can't wait to see what she's writing next!

Lady Anne & The Howl In The Dark
by
Donna Lea Simpson

What a great combination romance and mystery! The Marquess of Darkefell has no idea what he's in for when the spunky Lady Anne shows up on his doorstep one dark rainy eve, covered with blood and demanding answers. Summoned by her friend, Lady Anne refuses to back down to the Marquess, even when he tries using his kisses to distract her. The dialogue is witty and you won't know whether to cheer Anne on or shake your head as she plunges into one thing after another. I found myself chuckling as she got caught snooping on more than one occasion. This book is definitely something worth adding to your library. Even more exciting is that there are two more Lady Anne books coming out continuing the romance and adventure between these two.

Art of Compassion

I have been a fan of Christian music for a long time. Quite a few of my favorites participated in this project, so I was really interested in reading it. The book is a collection of short stories written by each artist about poverty around the world and. Some describe what they saw in South Africa, while others write on poverty in general. Many of the authors really look at poverty and how the church today deals with it. It is a very inspirational book and gives us a glimpse of the heart of each of these artists. It's a great companion piece to the CD.If you're a fan of Christian music this will probably appeal to you.

Very Valentine
by
Adriana Trigiani

Wow I don't even know where to start with this book other than to say it was a wonderfully delicious treat! All the talk of food in the book had me drooling! First I was SO drawn to the cover. I'm a sucker for a good cover and this one has a gorgeous cover. I really enjoyed this book. It was fun and romantic and sassy too! I loved watching the growth of Valentine throughout this story. I found the insight into the shoe industry extremely fascinating, and never really considered how much goes into designing shoes. I also didn't know there were places you could get shoes custom made for you..I learned something! This is my first Adriana Trigiani novel, and I am definitely a fan! She has a tremendous talent for describing the locations, the characters, the food, and the gorgeous shoes. I felt like I could see and taste them all. I really felt like I got to know her family and friends They are at any given moment crazy, cruel, funny, scared, lustful, hormonal, hopeless, and hopeful. This is definitely a book you'll want to read and then tell everyone else about it. You won't be disappointed in this one. Make sure you check out her website and see how you can get an autographed bookplate for your copy!

I thought this was a nice story, but I don't think it can be compared to Philippa Gregory book. This is a nice light read, and the story is very enjoyable. Unfortunately, for myself I kept waiting for more. The storyline seemed rather superficial like we were just getting a glimpse of this family, versus being in the middle of it. I was looking for more information about those historical details because it's not something that's been written a lot about in these kinds of romances. I think it's just a little ligbt and the characters aren't horrible developed, which just left me feeling empty at the end of the book because I never really got involved with the characters. I'd definitely recommend this to someone for a light interesting read. But if they are looking for a really in-depth piece of historical fiction this isn't the right book. All in all, I liked the story, but I'm not raving about it. Thanks to the publisher for allowing me to read and review this book.

Rubies in the Orchard How to Uncover the Hidden Gems in Your Business
by
Lynda Resnick
marta
, April 14, 2009
When I was approached by the author about reviewing her book, I had no idea who Lynda Resnick was. I'd seen the book on various sites, but really had no idea who or what it was about. Well now I know and I'm unbelievably impressed with Lynda and her marketing genius. I have a background in marketing (Business Marketing degree) and I sold newspaper advertising for many years so I am always interested in marketing books. I was prepared for the usual somewhat stodgy, slow moving book and I was very surprised. This book was anything but a stodgy marketing wannabe textbook. The story of how Lynda rose to the top is inspiring and at the same time daunting. This book is more autobiography than marketing book and some people will be very disappointed in that, but I found a lot of information in this book. Where I've seen some reviews that say this is just one big commercial for Lynda and her products, I disagree. In talking about how she made her products rise to the top, and talk about everything she has done and WHY she did it, we can learn by her example. One of Lynda's principle tenets is to find the intrinsic value of what you want to promote, do your research and then find your primary market. Rather than 'thinking outside of the box', Lynda encourages business people to dig deeper into the product and find out what makes it unique, special or needed and then use that information to market it. She is adamant about marketing towards that primary group of consumers who will want that product and not spending useless dollars elsewhere. Lynda has spent a lifetime promoting products and has done it amazingly successfully. Rather than hit the reader over the head with non-stop marketing advice, the book basically says "This is what I've done and it worked!", and sometimes the best method of leading is by example. Finally, I think anyone would be inspired by Lynda's story. The book is well paced and interesting. There is a lot of marketing insight in this book, but the marketing advice is twined in with the stories she tells. If you're looking for a hard hitting marketing book, this probably will be a little light for you. If you're an average person looking for some advice from someone who is uber successful, this is a great book. I think expecially it's a great book for women in business who need some inspiration from a woman who has been there and has made it work.

If Tomorrow Never Comes
by
Marlo Schalesky

, April 14, 2009
I really enjoyed this book. In fact I read it in less than a day. The story moves along at a good pace and kept me really interested. For myself, I thought the storyline was original and it rang very true. The basic plot of the story is centered the crumbling of the marriage between Kinna and Jimmy Henley. The reader is introduced to them at the end of a long period of attempting to have a baby and the destruction it was causing to their marriage. Various reasons lead up to the point they are at and I think many readers will see themselves in these characters. Feelings of betrayal by a spouse and by God, childhood issues, and the feelings of failure they are both experiencing all work to leave both of them hurting and bitter. It was very easy to get invested with these characters and really care about what was happening to them and their marriage. Although there were quite a few references to scripture, it didn't seem to be excessively "preachy". Overall I thought this was just a wonderful story about love and how sometimes we have to let go of our hurts and bitterness and keep trying, and most of all keep hanging on to our Faith. I think this story would be a great weekend curl-up-on-the-couch type of read.
