Liberating Lacey

I was pleasantly surprised by how good this story turned out to be. The relationship between Lacey and Hunter was thoughtfully and cleverly crafted, with both tangible chemistry and believable affection. Don't mistake this book for meaningless erotica -- there is a compelling love story here that will tug at your heartstrings even as it makes your blood sizzle.

A very intriguing book, indeed. I didn't always love it, true, but this was unlike anything I've ever read before -- and that fact alone makes this book extraordinary. This is a very visceral, completely story that will strike a chord with anyone who thinks they've seen all there is to be had from the vampire fiction genre.

This series is absolutely brilliant. Each book is better than the next, and the wait between is downright painful. If you haven't read this series -- or anything else by this author -- you're truly missing out.

Switched

I really enjoyed this book. It was instantly engaging, with a strong beginning that segued quickly into a well-paced plot that was entertaining throughout. The immediate appeal was the premise -- a fresh idea involving changelings and trolls that I don't want to get too much into, at the risk of revealing too much detail. Granted, some elements of the story are strongly reminiscent of "Vampire Academy", but this book still stands apart from a lot of the stuff currently on the shelves. Suffice to say, it's always nice to take a break from books about vampires, fairies, and werewolves. The best thing this book has going for it is the interesting variety of characters. Everyone is well-developed with vivid personalities and their own backstories. I have to admit, I'm not sure how well I like Wendy. I found myself frustrated by her passivity, and she didn't always feel as solid as a main character should be. Still, I detect room for growth. Also, there's something hinky about Matt. I have theories... we'll see how those pan out as the series progresses. Speaking of, I will definitely be following up with the next book.

Lord of the Abyss & Desert Warrior Lord of the AbyssDesert Warrior
by
Nalini Singh

Normally I give novellas and short stories a wide berth -- even the good ones are often a bit of a let-down. But everything Nalini Singh writes seems to be gold, and this book was no exception. I've read the first "Royal House of Shadows" book but not the next two. While I'm sure reading those first would have offered a more complete reading experience, I found it wasn't necessary in order to follow along with "Lord of the Abyss". Singh sets up the backstory so well that this could practically read as a standalone. The plot stays true to the overarching premise of the series without being hostage to it. This is a successful story within a story. As is the norm for Singh, the characters are the driving force for this book. Micah is a thoughtful compilation of alpha male and vulnerable victim. His female counterpart, Liliana, is brilliantly developed. And there are just enough side characters -- with compelling personalities of their own -- to fill out the scene without feeling cluttered. There are many reasons why this book is worth your while. The writing is clever and entertaining. The sexual chemistry between Micah and Liliana is delightfully spicy. The pace starts off with a bang and holds steady all throughout. In other words, you should definitely read it.

Discords Apple
by
Carrie Vaughn

"Discord's Apple" is a fantastic book that brings some of the greatest legends of our time to life. It's so incredibly imaginative and original that it stands out from all the other books I've read in the last year -- last several years, really. Carrie Vaughn is an exceptional storyteller, and I consider this to be her masterpiece thus far. In this book, she perfectly weaves the shining world of myths and fairytales with a grim, war-torn version of what our modern reality could become. The resultant story is a lovely blend of magic, pain, romance, and desperation. I could go on for hours about the brilliance of this book, but I'll sum up by saying it truly is a fairytale for the modern age, and that everyone should give it a try.
