The Online Identity Theft Prevention Kit: Stop Scammers, Hackers, and Identity Thieves from Ruining Your Life
by
Boyer, Alison

, May 27, 2009
When a friend of mine had their identity stolen recently, it was horrible to watch. I knew I had to be more careful with my personal information and how I used it online, and “The Online Identity Theft Prevention Kit” taught me to do just that. This book helps you to understand the many forms of identity theft, and how you can plug up information leaks – before it’s too late. The book takes a holistic and practical view of online identity theft, not only looking at how one protects themselves but also the reasons behind identity theft. The explanation of the value of my identity to thieves in chapter two ("Why would anyone want my identity, anyway?") was instrumental to my understanding of why even I'm at risk for theft. I also found chapter four ("99 Tips for Protection") to be really useful - I changed all of my passwords as soon as I read it! There were also helpful tips towards the end of the book, with practical step-by-step instructions and resource for recognizing identity theft and recovering your identity in chapter six ("Help! My Identity's Been Stolen!") and the appendices. "The Online Identity Theft Protection Kit" is an essential read for anyone living any part of their life online. This kit will show you the way to safety - before it's too late.

Painting the Body Beautiful: A Showcase of Expert Body Painting
by
Art Ketchum

, May 27, 2009
“Painting the Body Beautiful” is a tribute by Art Ketchum to the amazing, sexy talent and vision of Jim Brando. Brando’s art consists of painting realistic clothing of all different kinds – jeans, overalls, suits, swimsuits, uniforms, and lingerie. Sometimes the results are indistinguishable from the real thing. The swimsuits and lingerie, especially the example used to show the process of painting at the beginning of the book, always made me do a double-take. Some of the “outfits” – such as the nurse or the airline pilot – were a little more based in fantasy, conceding to the artificiality of the art. But that didn’t make them any less impressive! My only qualm with this picture-heavy book was the limited glimpse into the process of painting the body. At the beginning, there’s a detailed step-by-step explanation of how Brando paints lingerie, but there’s no further explanations of different kinds of body painting. How does one paint a realistic uniform, for example? How is painting a swimsuit different than painting lingerie? Despite this, “Painting the Body Beautiful” is an enjoyable look at an innovative art form. Ketchum and Brando will renew your appreciation for the art of painting and the beauty of the female form.

The MySpace.com Handbook: The Complete Guide for Members and Parents
by
T. Brian Chatfield

“The MySpace Handbook: The Complete Guide for Parents and Members” is a useful tool for parents and those looking to refine their social networking skills (particularly the former). The book offers practical step-by-step advice on navigating and understanding the benefits and dangers of MySpace.com and other social networks. As a former avid user of MySpace, I can say that author T. Brian Chatfield get a lot right. He takes a clear and levelheaded view of the way that adolescents use it to interact with one another – and with possible predators. Chatfield discusses these dangers realistically – with caution but not hysteria. He also emphasizes the positive parts of MySpace and other social networks – fun bonding and appropriate communication with others their age. The book is largely written from the perspective of a watchful parent, but every chapter has information and advice for both parents and novices. Chapters range from encyclopedic (what specific abbreviations and emoticons mean) to practical (how to enter appropriate interests) to age-old (bullies and what to do about them). Though Facebook may be slowly stealing users, most of the principal warnings and advice given in this book are applicable to Facebook. Of particular interest to parents are parts one ("Why MySpace has Your Children Entranced") and part three ("Staying Safe Online"). MySpace is also a very popular destination for bands, comedians and other performers, and part five of the book, "The Endless Possibilities of a Worldwide Audience", will be very useful to beginning artists, musicians, or performers who need to promote themselves and their work. "The MySpace Handbook" makes a necessary read for parents who want to familiarize themselves with their child’s habits online.
