Thick & Other Essays

This book is flat-out amazing. For anyone who likes first-person essays, it's a gem. And for those of you who haven't liked first-person essays in the past, you should give this one a go. It's way more insightful than the vast majority of books in this vein, but is way, WAY more accessible than the long-form writing that's usually called a 'think piece.'

Saints Astray
by
Jacqueline Carey

Another great book by Jacqueline Carey. She revisits the world of Santa Olivia, following Loup Garron and her girlfriend Pilar as they explore life beyond Outpost. She hits just the right dystopian balance of depressing-yet-plausible, which makes the successes and challenges in the book that much more resonant. This is one of those "Young Adult" titles that deservedly breaks free from any kind of age limit.

Divergent 01
by
Roth, Veronica

Parts of this book were excellent - Roth does an amazing job evoking different environments and scenarios without getting lost in superfluous detail. Tris is a compelling character, and while she skirts a bit close to the Practically Perfect in Every Way trope that's so comon in YA protagonists, she still evolves and changes. However (you knew there was a however): Roth chooses to skirt over some of the most pivotal plot points in the book with oversimplification, tired cliches, and one unfortunate instance of a character acting woefully OUT of character due to True Love. It was jarring enough to yank me out of the story repeatedly, despite the fact that I can forgive a lot when the characters have reeled me in. Bottom line: if you liked Hunger Games, you'll love this, as it's a far stronger take on a YA dystopia-with-a-cool-heroine. If you need your stories to have plot rationales that stand up to more than a quick glance as you read past, keep looking.
