Passing Strange
by
Ellen Klages

In a version of 1940's San Fran just a little different than our own, a group of unconventional women are living lives half-in-secret. They are all lesbians, joining each other for dinners and nights in carefully selected bars, but each moves through her own social circles, involved in everything from restaurants in Chinatown to pulp magazine art. But when their delicately balanced world is threatened, they have some unusual options at their disposal. The subtle magic in this story seems to be divisive among reviewers, but I was one of the folks who enjoyed it. Klages' writing is immersive and created a wonderful world for the reader to explore. She picks a lovely balance between descriptiveness and brevity, creating writing that somehow feels spacious despite conveying so much. I did find the ending a little too neat, although it had been hinted at earlier, and there were characters I would have liked to see fleshed out better, but given this slim book, I could understand the choice not to spend too much time outside the main friend group.

Ghosts in Time and Space
by

I enjoyed this poetry collection. Richardson uses many different formats and techniques, which could have easily caused the poems to feel fragmented and isolated, but instead each style fits the character the poem is about. The result is that the reader gets a wide array of poems, a sampler of places, people, thoughts and things. Richardson manages to write emotional pieces without becoming melodramatic or overwrought, instead stating scenarios calmly and with a sense of certainty that results in an even stronger connection to the author than any elaborate, long-winded arrangements would. Some of my favorite poems were "Endless Loop", a sad, short and resigned piece, and "Dual" and "Duello", a pair explaining the same accident through two sets of eyes.

Vampire Kisses 01

Every since she was little Raven has loved the supernatural, in particular vampires! This (plus her gothic dressing habits) has made her an outsider in her town and even her family. But when a family finally moves into an old mansion nearby she is delighted by the new and eccentric household, she is charmed by exactly what horrifies the rest of town. In fact she thinks it might be possible that they are real-life vampires. I picked this up in great shape for $0.20 at the Salvation Army, thinking that although it looked extremely stupid it might be good for a laugh. It's a good thing that was all I was expecting, because that is exactly what I got. Mary-Sues and cliches run rampant, in fact that is pretty much all there is! I alternately rolled my eyes, sneered and laughed at how ridiculous the whole book was. If you have some time to kill and need something mindless this is good.

Book Of A Thousand Days

After her refusal to marry Lord Khasar, who she knows is evil, Lady Saren and her maid Dashti are locked in a tower for seven years. This book is told as Dashti's journal. As they suffer from heat, cold and lack of food, Dashti tried to take care of her mistress, who's mind becomes damaged with fear and isolation. Saren becomes steadily more and more unhinged, and Dashti decides that that they must find a way to escape. I really liked this book, Dashti was a strong and interesting person and I admired her ability to help keep Saren from giving up. The writing was very good and lyrical and I liked the drawings and doodles that Dashti had in her journal.

Immortals 02 Blue Moon

Ever is learning how to control her abilities with the help of her boyfriend Damen. However then he seems to be losing his memory and even seems sick, which should be impossible for an Immortal. When Damen becomes sicker and completely forgets about her, Ever goes to Summerland, a magical place where she hopes to find him a cure. I was not hugely fond of this book, despite liking the first. The characters were quite flat and the plot wasn't anymore interesting then the first.
