Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Unwritten Volume 01 Tommy Taylor & The Bogus Identity
by

I knew from Carey and Gross's work on Lucifer that they could make an amazing story come to life, but still i couldn't anticipate just how much they'd do with The Unwritten. Protagonist Tom Taylor is sucked into a world where story and reality blur together. Be careful, it's likely that you'll be sucked in along with him!

John Dies At The End

An internet cult classic for years, John Dies at the End has finally made its way into bookstores everywhere. JDatE has become my personal favorite among all books because of its unique seamless blend of original humor, gut-numbing fear, and the indescribably absurd. This book is like no book you have ever read. So is every other book, but trust me - this one is too. Seriously, though, this book keeps me up at night sometimes. Maybe it's just the eerie voices that keep emanating from it at midnight (I put it in a box with pillows to muffle it, and that helps). It's probably the fact that the reality it exposes, the nightmare underpinnings of our existence, is so terrifying that it's hard NOT to think about. Maybe we can fight off the shadow people with the power of rock and roll and dongs - but what if we can't? What then? Desperately waiting for the sequel.
