Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Battling the Gods Atheism in the Ancient World
by
Tim Whitmarsh
Kathryn Simmons
, May 11, 2016
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is written by a scholar for a non scholar like myself. It is packed full of historical examples of non believers, how they were treated, how the whole idea of Atheism was viewed. There is no doubt that Atheism is not a new concept. The lives of ancient philosophers are fascinating and it is amazing how much evidence still exists for Mr. Whitmarsh (University of Cambridge) to draw on. When there is only a little information he puts his training and knowledge to suggest plausible ideas. Mr. Whitmarsh does not take sides, but presents the facts. His writing in engrossing and covers very ancient Greece through Constantine. The last chapter felt a bit rushed but was not really a hindrance. Some names and works I recognized from my Greek Art History class and I took notes and plan to follow up on my own. I only wish we could speak to each other the way the ancients did, because with a very few exceptions (Socrates) it was a battle of words and little else.

Insomnia
by
Stephen King

As a huge fan of Uncle Stevie I cannot believe it took me so long to get to Insomnia. Several years ago my sister said she couldn't get through it---once I picked it up I read it in a week!! The story pulled me in right from the beginning. His characters are so alive and so easy to relate to (except for the supernatural stuff!). His visions are so beautifully written that my mind could see them clearly, like they were right in front of me. This story is a must for fans of The Gunslinger series, and I count myself as one of them. If you have read the series the background connections in Insomnia are edifying. If you have yet to read The Gunslinger, read Insomnia first. Highly recommended!

Siren Songs from the Heart of Austin

I LOVED this book! An eclectic group of characters from aliens to bus boys to cringe worthy moments and laugh out loud situations. The 22 stories are all connected and Austin, TX is one the main characters. The author spent many years in Austin and his love and appreciation of the city and its quirky inhabitants shines.
