Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

The Catcher in the Rye

The Catcher in the Rye was good. It was very good, but it was unlike any other book I've ever read. It was a completely unique experience for me because, while the book was wonderful, I hated the protagonist. Holden was annoying and I couldn't stand him. However, that's what made the book good. Holden was real. I'm sure there's someone out there exactly like Holden and that's what made the book so amazingly good.

I read this book almost a year ago now and the moment I started it, I knew it was going to be wonderful. You never know what's going to happen next and it keeps you on your toes. There's just something about the book that just makes you want to keep reading and reading and reading. Even when I had finished, I knew it was going to be a hard year before I got to read the second book. I would recommend this book to pretty much anyone that loves a good story.

I originally read this book for school a few years ago, but I was excited to read it, nevertheless, and I wasn't disappointed. It's a wonderful story that warms my heart every time I read it. This book embodies the phrase "curl up next to the fire with a good book". This book is perfect for every age.

I hated this book. I know that sounds a bit harsh, but I really, truly hated this book. I was really excited to read it because the one before it (Saving the World and Other Extreme Sports) was wonderful! Even as I read it, I didn't think it was horrible. I mean, it wasn't amazing or anything, but it wasn't the worst book I'd ever read either. Then came the Epilogue (don't they always ruin things?). It was the worst ending (and I mean the WORST) I'd ever read and it completely ruined the rest of the book for me.

I thought this book was quite good. Better than the first, but not by much. It's definitely, a early-teen book, but I'm alright with that every now and again. It was refreshing to read something... easy and fun. I didn't have to think too hard to read this book and would recommend it to anyone that is looking for a very relaxed book.

The Host
by
Stephenie Meyer

When I read this book, I thought I wasn't going to like it. I had read the first chapter on Stephenie Meyer's website and that only confused me and made me not want to read it. The only reason, really, that I wanted to read it is because Meyer wrote Twilight as well, which I like quite a bit, and I'm sure glad I did. I think the reason that I like the Host so much, is because there are so many different kinds of love in it. There is the sister-brother love, there is the love between friends, the father-daughter love, the random stranger love, the romantic love. The Host has got it all and that's why I think it is a wonderful book. Not because it's connected to the Twilight series, but, by itself, it is amazing and wonderful.

This novel have just a bit of everything that creates a wonderful balance between humor and sensitivity. I could be laughing so hard my stomach hurt one page and crying at the bottom of the same page. I'd recommend this book to just about anybody.
