Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Lovers Dictionary
by
David Levithan

, January 19, 2012
You can call The Lover's Dictionary gimmicky, you can focus on the fact that it is told through entries in a dictionary, but what hits you - unfailingly and powerfully - are the words that Levithan chooses for his narrator. He puts interesting twists on popular phrases, finds meaning in the small bits. What I find powerful about this novel is how the language works and creates such a beautiful piece. “When you’re in love with someone, a well-placed question mark can be the difference between bliss and disaster, and a deeply respected period or a cleverly inserted ellipsis can prevent all kinds of exclamations.” (162) Yes, something powerful is being said about love, but what is even more powerful is the language - the way it flows into itself lyrically, often with double meaning.

Eyre Affair Thursday Next 01
by
Jasper Fforde

The first of the Thursday Next series, this book is hilarious, witty and engaging. As the reader follows Thursday, a Literary Operative, through the narrative, she encounters the wonderful literature as well as the evil villains of Thursday's world. Thursday is a strong, endearing female lead and when combined with the novel's clever literary references I found the book to be extremely satisfying. The first of Fforde's many novels, its one to get you hooked.
