What I Hate

I love Roz Chast, and this book is funny but also kind of sad. The anxiety and fear comes through in the facial expressions and the squiggly lines of the drawings. I saw the artwork from this book displayed at the Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco and had to purchase the book!

This a fantastic approachable no-nonsense guidebook, written by locals! I have visited Maui twice and using this book lead me to fun adventures and helped to avoid expensive tourist traps. The pictures are marvelous and the accompanying iPhone app is a helpful tool for when you are not able to carry the book along.

I have been reading this powerful little book in small doses during quiet moments of my day and taking some time to absorb its deep practical wisdom. Pema's books a unique gems of simplicity clarity and encouragement, they lift the heart and remind us to be more human through the ups and downs life presents. This one is no exception.

Annals of the Western Shore 02 Voices
by
Ursula K. Le Guin

I am not a usual reader of sci-fi or fantasy, but I make exceptions once in a while, and Le Guin is one of the authors I do this for with pleasure. This book is a great story about the power of storytelling and the written word. It is a beautiful coming-of-age, coming-into-your-own-power story. There is complexity in the characters, so it is not just black and white, good vs evil. The Ansul landscape and the details of their culture and religion are so meticulously artfully crafted that you can feel yourself transported to this magical place.

Tiny Beautiful Things: Advice On Love & Life from Dear Sugar
by

This book breaks your heart again and again. It opens it wide and fills it with genuine emotion. I found at moments that I could not put it down and yet had to just stop reading to have some time to digest what it had brought up. I love Sugar's blunt approach and her storytelling, how she connects the troubles of those that write to her to the troubles she has known in her life and distills the essential message. She is angry, imperfect, profane, tolerant, kind. She cares.
