beijing coma is an absolutely engrossing novel. as the character dei wei lies in a coma, he reflects on his life and we are revealed the inhuman consequences of mao's great leap forward. we meet the youmg students as they assemble in tiaanmen square and begin to organize their momentous protest. the massacre is horrendous.china itself is awakening from a coma and ma jian is a powerful voice for the students who gave their lives. this book is a must read.

an extremely interesting look at 20th century chinese history thru the story of one woman---extremely well-written.characters are three-dimensional and well developed.
