Marry Me: A Romance
by
John Updike

Excellent book, and early Updike at his best. Captures the nuances of family life, affairs, and the social pressures of couples to stay together, contrasted with the seventies era of experimentation and riske behavior. This book could easily have been written today, even though it is over 30 years old. Updike is a master of powerful dialogue, and creates scenes that build in tension and dynamics. I loved the backdrop of the beach as a symbol for freedom and wildness, and the satire of social conventions. Definitely recommend this to any Updike fans, or those who like explorations of relationships.
