Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. i felt like this book was written exactly for me. this is exactly the book i wanted to read, with exactly the characters and plot i didn't even know i wanted to read. i'm sure it's not for everyone, and a "good book" is subjective, but to me, this book is perfect. i have thought about it every day since i started it. but i can't tell you why. i don't want to summarize the plot or talk about the style because this book feels like more than the sum of its parts. i don't want to write down my favorite parts because it feels like cheating. honestly, writing this feels like wearing my heart on the outside of my body. i am seriously emotional about this book. if you read this book, i kind of don't want to know because it will be like you know too much about me.

Picture This: The Near-Sighted Monkey Book
by
Lynda Barry

Lynda Barry kills it in this most excellent volume that helps the reader tap into the state of making pictures with this book. The spirit animal guide of a nearsighted sock monkey guides you through questions like, why do children draw & when do adults stop? It's about how we fight against making art, even though it's a natural and healthy part of your brain's functioning, and how to remove those obstacles & free your pen/crayon/paint brush. It's mostly a creative journey, but people who love Lynda Barry's work will get lost in her gorgeous pages and anecdotes. It's like paging through her art diary, but it's a secret letter to your subconscious giving you permission to make pictures. Barry has been making the case for several years that art has an absolute biological function, like an immune system for your mental health. This volume is the extension of the ideas and questions in her previous book What It Is. I really enjoyed digging through this, and it's much cheaper than talk therapy or anti-depressants.
