Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Writing Great Books for Young Adults Everything You Need to Know from Crafting the Idea to Landing a Publishing Deal
by

With Twilight and Harry Potter as household names, we are all clamouring to jump on the young adult book publishing bandwagon. Ms. Brooks tells it like it is with concrete tips on how to write and then submit your young adult novel manuscript. I'm a published writer and creative writing teacher for young adults and find this book a staple for my writing resource shelves. From gathering memories of our own teen years, developing an idea, characters with motivations, plot, setting, pacing -this book has it all! Even what NOT to do when writing for teens/young adults. Very timely and worth the purchase!

Center of Everything
by
Laura Moriarty

We follow Evelyn from childhood through teen years, looking at the world and people around her. Though a small town girl with small town acquaintances, the era of the novel is set in the time of Regan's presidency and our "beef" with Russia. There are many historical references (Roe vs Wade; teaching evolution in schools, and the fallen Space Shuttle Challenger) which add layers to the book's rich texture of character and setting description. The dialogue rings true, as does Moriarty's sense of humor and compassion. Mother-daughter relationships are explored, as is the inner workings of a pre-teen and her view of herself and her peers. I looked forward to my daily commute when I would "read" more of this great book via audiobook.

Writing Magic Creating Stories That Fly
by
Gail Carson Levine

As a new creative writing teacher for Young Adults, I find this book useful in many ways. For one, the writing of Ms. Levine is clear, concise and has a young sense of humor. Secondly, I admire the straight-forwardness the author uses especially when discussing writers' groups, how to handle rejection from publishers and how to take in and use criticism from fellow writers. Not only does the author touch on all aspects of writing fiction (finding ideas, adding details, making characters come to life, pacing the story, setting the scene, etc.) she also shares the importance of showing AND telling, finding your unique voice and the power of rewrites. All around excellent writing book for young writers (and more experienced writers, as well.) Oh, and I didn't even mention the writing exercises at the end of each chapter.
