Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Absolutely the best book I have read in a long, long time. It's rare that I find a book that keeps me wide awake and turning the pages until 2 a.m., but "Room" did it...I've never felt so emotionally attached to the characters and plot of a book. "Room" is captivating and well-told. This is definitely one book I'm recommending to everyone.

Girl Who Played with Fire
by
Stieg Larsson

I don't usually pick up books classified as "thrillers" but after discovering "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" I HAD to run out and get "The Girl Who Played with Fire." Larsson does an amazing job of twisting and turning the plot--every time I thought I had figured something out, I was wrong. Larsson is a fantastic storyteller and his complex characters keep you turning the page.

An absolutely engrossing page turner, and one of the best books I have read this year--I couldn't put it down. If you have a weekend to sit and read, pick up this book. You won't put it down, and you won't be disappointed.

Beautifully written and emotionally real. You're sure to find a character you can identify with amid the pages of "Olive Kitteridge."

Paper Towns
by
John Green

Another fantastic book by John Green. "Paper Towns" is witty and captures the essence of the "slightly awkward kid in the midst of high school" perfectly. I laughed out loud and fell in love with Green's writing style and relatable characters. Definitely a must-read.

Hush Hush

If you enjoyed Twilight, you'll enjoy this dark, fallen angel romance about Nora, a typical teenage girl, and Patch, her bad boy biology partner with a mysterious demeanor. Nora doesn't understand why it seems like someone wants to kill her, and her best friend is convinced that Patch is behind all the creepy things that seem to be happening. Nora isn't sure what to think until she starts falling for Patch, and has to decide if she thinks her safety is worth risking to figure out his secrets...

Catching Fire: Hunger Games #2
by
Suzanne Collins

A fantastic follow-up to Collins' The Hunger Games. As with The Hunger Games, I couldn't put it down, and I've been recommending the trilogy to everyone I know. Collins keeps you turning pages by tossing in some great twists and turns along the way. The only reason I'm rating it a 4 is because it takes a little more time to pick up the pace in the beginning compared to The Hunger Games. Despite that, once it picks up, you won't want to put it down. Can't wait for the 3rd book's release in August!
