One Night Wilderness: Portland:

This is a really good guide book. It's got a lot of great overnight (or longer) trips in it. I like the scales it uses for scenery, difficulty and the all important solitude. It's got good, short descriptions of the hike and what you'll find along the way, as well as directions to get there. I'd love to give this book 5 stars, but I can't. The problem with the book, and why it only gets 3, is that it lacks important info that's easily available, and would make using it so easy that it's ridiculous not to have it. All the trails it mentions are numbered by the forest service. You can use these numbers online or when talking to a ranger to find out more information, exact information, and to help plan your trip when you're doing research that's not this book. But you know what? This book makes no use of these trail numbers. Instead, you get, Go here, turn left at the junction, keep going straight... which does work to get you there, but does not work to help you research beforehand, or use the trail markers and signs along the way, or talk with other hikers on the trails to get immediate information. Pretty insane not to have that info.

This is a great place to start with the Hellboy/BPRD series. Highly recommended even if you're not normally a fan of graphic novels. Mignola blends folk lore and mythology into a highly unique series.

B P R D Hell on Earth Volume 01 New World

Hell on Earth takes off from the previous end of the Plague of Frogs storyline, and jumps right in to a whole new story arc featuring Abe, Daimyo and Darryl the wendigo. Great stuff. Dark Horse has done a fantastic job with BPRD over the years, and this new release isn't any different. If you're new to BPRD, you're able to jump right in here, although I'd suggest going back to read Plague of Frogs. It's good, that's why!

Hellboy House of the Living Dead

What if Hellboy was a luche-libre wrestler in Mexico during the 50's? What if he had to battle the infamous Universal monsters of Frankenstein, Dracula and the Wolfman? This story is a lot of fun, and this book has some great art work. Very creative and entertaining, a must read for any Mignola or Hellboy fan. Fantastic, fun story, but really just a regular comic sized one-shot in a hardcover. I would have given this 5 stars, but for a one-shot in a hardcover, this seems a bit too high priced.

Not your average vampire book. Justin Cronin's The Passage is a well told epic story. Engaging and engrossing, it's one of the rare books that you really cannot put down. Highly recommended.

Amazing Screw On Head & Other Curious Objects
by
Mike Mignola

I'm a Mike Mignola fan and collector. I had finally gotten my Hellboy and B.P.R.D. collections up to where I wanted them, and bought this to begin rounding out the collection. I wasn't sure what to expect, but I figured that at the very least it would have very nice art work to look out. Those were my expectations when I ordered it. While reading it, my expectations were blown away! This is a book of one issue length story (eponymous) and several shorts completely unrelated to the Hellboy/B.P.R.D. universe. All of them were beautifully rendered with Mignola's trademark style, and the stories themselves were excellent. Not comical in the classic sense, but very humorous and highly creative. The Magician and the Snake had to be my favorite. All of them were a blend of sometimes dark, sometimes absurd humor and beautiful art. I highly recommend this to any fan of Mike Mignola, or independent comic books in general.
