Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Could not put this book down. Funny I got it from a book club to fulfill a commitment and it just set on the shelf for a year Well being laid up after surgery and running out of things to read, anyway. It was spell-binging and I could not put it down, the whole concept of the story was an inserting entwining of chatterers and a fascinating theory of Isabella, a machine that claims to be God. Really entertaining. Fascinating ending.

Memoirs Of A Geisha Movie Tie In

I LOVE THIS BOOK>>>> This is my favorite book of all time, and have read it more than once. And seen the film a dozen times, but the book is a thousand times better. As an American I had a preconceived idea of what Geisha's were, but the book carries you to a time in Japan that had not been seen by Americans, a time that was both beautiful and ugly, sweet and bitter and it will make you cry, maybe a lot, like me. I have found this book opened a inner sensitivity to other cultures, cultures lost. I'm a better person having for read it.

I guess it is time for someone who did not like this book to steak out, I hated it. First, I'm very spiritual, and found this book the 4 big “S's.”, Silly-Sugary-Syrupy-Stupid. A dumb fairy tale. But fairy tales are for preschoolers, NOT ADULTS! Come on people. Get real! Grow-up! Stop reading fairy tales.

The Beautiful Cigar Girl: Mary Rogers, Edgar Allan Poe, and the Invention of Murder
by

This was an impossible book to read, poorly written and just weird. It leads you down the road on the death of this cigar girl, Mary Rodgers in Manhattan, and then just jumps all over the place. You get a in depth bio of Edgar Allen Poe, then the author talks about Jack the Ripper, but wasn't that in the White Chapel district in London? England? This was a very, very weird read. Don't waste your time or $.

Audition

Barbara Walters

No question Ms. Walter's had an interesting life, but the book was far too long and even though I really looked forward to reading it, is was boring-wordy and a big disappointment. I love to read but out of 1-10 I gave it a 2 because it was just too boring.
