Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Want to feel like a writer? This book will inspire you. Just keeping a journal is enough for a lot of us but here's one that got published! And it's GREAT! The simple things and thoughts of life make us happy. Reading about Amy Krouse Rosenthal's progress triggers similar experiences and encourages extrapolations. Give this book to a friend so you can discuss it and share your own ideas with her. Personalize your copy by writing in the margins! Keep it by your bedside and re-read treasured segments.

Ranch Trails & Short Tales
by
Claire C Cordes
lkathrynbruce
, November 18, 2009
Ranching in Arizona's Bradshaw Mountains wouldn't be an easy task today. In 1900 when the author was born the remote ranchers were connected only by horse trails. Her parents moved from Texas to an even wilder area, raised goats and a large family and a garden that made them fairly self-sufficient. Her memory provides "tales" that range from her folks trying to develop a school to notorious housethieves that hid out in the mountains between Flagstaff and Phoenix. The intrigue of visitors and train rides back east blend with sweet stories of local marriages that prompt the question: How did hearts find each other in such a wilderness?!? Clearly not an experienced writer, we might think Ms Cordes spends too much time trying "to protect the innocent" by inventing names rather than using the real names of characters that existed around the turn of the 20th century. Like her name they would probably ring a bell to locals familiar with Cordes Junction along I17 and appeal to even more readers. Nevertheless, the old tales are entertaining and a joy to laugh at, especially if you are new to the area or exploring the dirt roads and camping in Prescott National Forest...an area that still seems a part of our territorial past.
