Modoc The True Story of the Greatest Elephant That Ever Lived

In looking over my comment, I'm remembering (somewhat sheepishly) that it's Bram's story, not Ralph's. Obviously this calls for another reading - one I look forward to.

One of my all-time favorite books! This heart-warming, heart-wrenching true - though at times unbelievable - story about Ralph Helfer's two greatest loves takes you on a journey from Europe to India and across America. The book exemplifies the beautiful bond that can exist between man and animal. A must read for any animal lover!

Gates of Fire An Epic Novel of the Battle of Thermopylae
by
Steven Pressfield

Infinitely better than the movie (although seeing Gerard Butler unshaven and wearing a leather speedo wasn't all that bad), Gates of Fire is a riveting look into the culture and comraderie in a warrior society. Told from the perspective of boy trained by - but not born of - Spartan soldiers, this work illuminates the events leading up to and following the battle of Thermopylae without the dramatic hyperbole of Hollywood's 300. This is a great read for anyone who enjoys historical fiction.
