I really, really enjoyed this book. I took it with me everywhere I went and I was stopped several times by people telling me how much they'd enjoyed reading it. This is just an all-around good read.

This is a fictional story with a "true to life" feel. The book is written by the same author that wrote the non-fiction Kabul Beauty School: An American Woman Goes Behind the Veil. The main character is an American woman who has established a coffee shop in Afghanistan and is trying to build her business at the same time that the Taliban is disassembling the culture. I appreciated the clarity of the writing, the straightforward story, and the diversity of the characters. Because I'd already read the The Kabul Beauty School I believe the "stage had been set" for me, but she did a good job of describing how the people there live. I enjoyed this story (cultural violence was generally alluded to rather than experienced, and I appreciated that) but it did leave me saddened for real Afghanistan, particularly the women.
