Cloud Of Sparrows

I absolutely loved this book, it's very sad but also beautiful, about a clash between two worlds -the Western culture and the Japanese culture - and how that affects both of them, portrayed by two main characters - a Japanese lord and an American missionary. I also love the sequel to this book, Autumn Bridge, which has some questions still left unanswered that gives me hope that we could have more books in this series. I'd certainly would love to read them.

Skipping Christmas
by

This is a short novel about a married couple who decide that 'this year we don't do Christmas'. And of course, their friends, neighbors and strangers have diffuculties accepting that. The book's idea is interesting, but its accomplishement leaves one wishing for better. The novel can be read in a single evening, and sometimes it feels like it was written in a single evening. The characters are little fleshed out, the plot could have used a bit more humor, and this book will not leave you wishing for more. Its just a simple story which I'd recommend for an evening sometime before Christmas.

Doomsday Book

A captivating read, the best part of which was the medieval setting. I'm not an expert of medieval England, so to me the descriptions seemed quite believable, and the medieval characters quite were engaging, thoug the plot did take time to develop to something more interesting. I particularly liked the final part of the novel, when the Plague finally strikes the village. The future setting wasn't particularly interesting, with little developed characters, and served more as a contrast and also for suspense. The novel suffered in a few places due to being written in the eighties. There was little of future technology described, but the lack of mobile phones jarred the most. Half of the problems in the novel could've been solved if the characters used any kind of a mobile communication device. All in all, this is a novel that is best to be approached with your heart and emotions, and not your mind. Recommended with reservations

An absolutely hilarious read! It's completely made up of Lotus Notes emails sent between co-workers of a large fictional advertising agency, so it takes some time to adjust to reading this unusual style, but then you can delve right into their e-mail conversations and the whole tangle of office intrigues. The plot is not very coplicated - the agency tries to beat their competitors and get a deal with a large company - it's the interactions between the characters that is entertaining. For someone like me, who actually uses Lotus Notes at work, this novel is even funnier! And so nearly true:) I particularly loved the small side-plot concerning the agency's director, a regional manager from Finland, and a 'system glitch':) If you like this book, it has two sequels, 'E Before Christmas' and 'E Squared'. I haven't yet read them, but if they're as good as this one, I'll definitely check them out.

Difference Engine

It's my first novel both by W. Gibson and by B. Sterling, and also my first steampunk novel. Maybe this reason was the reason I didn't particularly like it. It was unusual, that's true, I also liked the authors's writing style, besides, the mystery set up from the very beginning kept me reading to the end, but in general, this novel didn't fullfilled my expectations. The characters are many and sometimes it's difficult to keep track of them. Clearly, this novel wasn't my cup of tea, but I'd recommend you to try it, maybe you'll like it better.

Undomestic Goddess

An overall enjoyable chick-lit/romance novel with some hilarious mooments. The best part of it to me was the description about how the main protagonist samantha deals with the usual domestic choires - doing laundry, cleaning, cooking etc. For me personally it's hard to believe that someone would be so ignorant about it and that's what's so funny in this book, though I admit that there might be people who never actually had the need or want to do the domestic routine. The second part of the book is sligtly less inteesting as it strays into romance, there's also some action at the end. All in all, I'd recommend it, especially for cold winter evenings.

An entertaining read, particulary recommended for boys, but girls will like it too. A typical but nevertheless enjoyable coming-of-age story set in a fantasy world. Ends off leaving you to want more, and luckily there's more:)

STARGATE SG-1 Sacrifice Moon

A great Stargate SG-1 story, set in the first season of the series. It's got the humour of the series, and some great action scenes, and also some very dramatic scenes, as the team struggles to survive on a planet where half of the population turns into canibalistic predators at night and hunts for the other half, a fate that touches the SG-1 team too. A must for any Stargate fan.

I really liked it. The story is touching and drawing one in, and has some great moments, especially towards the end, and also a good ending. The plot is not very complicated, and a bit stretched from nowadays perspective (it might have been true at the time it was writen, though), but the story isn't less good due to that. I'd recommend this book for reading with/for kids, especially girls.

A good sci-fi thriller worth your time. The very first chapter has drawn me in, and the action-packed pages kept me reading to the very end. An enternaining read, recommended for boring evenings.

Consider Phlebas

It's a space opera novel all right. Lots of action, galaxy spanning events, some sex and gory moments, and some philosophy to. Not a very complicated plot though, no deep mysteries or riddles to set your mind to. The author really has writing talent - even if I didn't much liked the plot and yawned during the long, detailed descriptions, there were some good places that kept me reading it to the end.

STARGATE ATLANTIS Rising

Quite OK. If you've seen the pilot episode, you won't miss much if you don't read this book, but as a novel it's quite good, and I didn't notice any big mistakes in it. I'd recommend this for those who haven't seen the first SGA episode, or are completists and simply must own every single stargate novel.
