The Thirteenth Tale

To me, The Thirteenth Tale is like a love letter to the written word. In addition to an excellent story, it also contains lush imagery which appeals to bibliophiles like myself. A wonderful read for anybody who loves books--as narratives, as objets d'art, and as familiar friends.

Manhood For Amateurs
by
Michael Chabon

Manhood for Amateurs is the next satisfying link in the chain of the author who began his writing career with "Mysteries of Pittsburgh". The evolution of the author is obvious in his newest collection of essays. The text is at once painful and enlightening, the subject matter is--at times--alien, but also resonates with familiarity. This is a great read, accessible to both Chabon's longtime fans and his new readers.

Story of O

An essential text in the exploration of sexuality and gender. Story of O--translated from French--reads beautifully. I love this particular little edition... it is small and white and unassuming; one remains unaware of the scandalous nature of the text contained within, and it is a pleasant, if not unsettling, surprise.

Yellow Wallpaper
by
Perkins Gilman, Charlotte

A wonderful read-- this text is a prime example of the medicalization of female emotion. The concept of the "Resting Cure" was typical of the era in which Gilman writes. This 'cure' confined women prone to 'hysterics' to quiet and supposedly calm spaces within the Victorian household. Experiencing the text is an enlightening experience, for both men and women.
