Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. There's a Slight Chance I Might Be Going to Hell: A Novel of Sewer Pipes, Pageant Queens, and Big Trouble

I will admit that I found some of the situations in this book slightly amusing, but I seriously cannot read this. The author's incessant use of ever-more-outrageous metaphors is driving me up a wall. I could put up with it from Maye; when the lawn-boy started spouting his own crazy metaphors, I had had enough. The whole book, from the writing to the off-the-wall characters that pepper every page, is completely overblown and unnecessary. This sounded like a funny book, but the slight storyline can't hold up to the effort the author has poured into being humorous.

Born in the USA How a Broken Maternity System Must Be Fixed to Put Women & Infants First

This book is sad and terrifying and utterly engrossing. As a nursing student with a strong interest in maternity (I plan to go on to be a midwife), I found this book to be an excellent and informative read. I would highly recommend it to anyone planning to have a baby. If doctors aren't going to follow their Hippocratic oath, it's important for consumers to educate themselves, and this book is a great place to start.
