Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay
by
Michael Chabon
NickFerrall
, January 14, 2010
Michael Chabon's ability to encompass the last fifty years of history and culture in America, through the lens of the comic book industry, is a feat only a master storyteller can accomplish. It's worth noting that The Amazing Adventures was released only a month prior to the election of George W. Bush. The past decade has been far from prosperous, and this book lives as an artifact of hope and adventure - blissfully unaware of the future ahead of it.

History of Western Philosophy
by
Bertrand Russell
NickFerrall
, December 30, 2009
Russell's History of West Philosophy is an essential staple for anyone hoping to understand where society has been, and most importantly where humanity needs to go. I gained a lot just from Russell's analysis of philosophy existing somewhere between religion and science, and how societies oscillate between rigid dogma and individualistic dissolution. His description of Liberalism attempting to evolve out of this oscillation between dogma and dissolution, and into a sustainable social cohesion, is pretty remarkable and solidifies my socio/political position. Some may think his Positivist outlook is too analytical; however, this text is filled with passion and hope. Russell's a master storyteller, and brings even the most ancient of thinkers back to life.
