Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. They Cage the Animals at Night
by
Jennings Michael Burch

When I was in junior high school, I read they Cage the Animals at Night for the first time. I am now 35, and my tattered, yet cherished copy sits in my office at work so that when I need a reality check, it is always there to provide. The story of Jennings Michael Birch isn't a pleasant one. It is gut-wrenching at times, but the endurance of innocence is paramount. Written by the boy who experienced it when he became a man and a father himself, this book hinges on the ideas of family, love, sacrifice, abuse, friendship, longing, loss, dispair, and hope. Jennings and his forever friend Doggie are always with me, to remind me of where I came from, how far I have come, and what can be accomplished with love.

Harry Potter and the Goblet Of Fire: Harry Potter 4

This book, and the entire series, changed the literary world for children. To see kids everwhere sit down and tackle a book of this manitude was incredible. I loved that J.K. did not shy away from writing epic novels for youth-- she wrote until the story was told to its full glory.
