Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)

Help

I started reading THE HELP this last summer because I wanted to read it before seeing the movie. Within the first few pages I was deeply engrossed and could hardly put it down. The characters were so well defined I could almost see and feel them. Although I didn't grow up in the south, I did grow up in the era the book was set in. It was almost too real. It helped me reflect on where our country was and where it is now, as well as how far we still have to go. It is an unforgettable book and as good as the movie was, the book is still my favorite.

Cronin's style reminded me a little of Cormac McCarthy.

It took me a while to get used to Mccarthy's style, but the book was overwhelming. It isn't the type of feel good-happy ending that I would go for, so for me to feel so strongly about this book is significant to me! I'm a K-6 Teacher Librarian and I was tempted to nominate a children's book, but as I thought more about it, I wanted to vote for a book that impressed me despite its somber tone.
