Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Immobility
by

Certainly the best of the 6 SciFi bks I read in 2012, IMMOBILITY is a haunting, Beckettesque tale about a man who wakes -- or is woken -- up in a post-apocalyptic setting. He cannot walk and cannot remember much about himself. To tell too much more would waste yr time and ruin the reading of this great novel, but rest assured that if you enjoy gritty SciFi and/or Samuel Beckett's grim work, this tome will continue to resonate w/ you long after yr done w/ it. I've never read any of Mr. Evenson's work before, and just happened to encounter this book on display at my local branch of the Tacoma Public Library, but rest assured I'll be reading more of his books. I might even go back and buy IMMOBILITY and re-read. Highly recommended.

Supergods: What Masked Vigilantes, Miraculous Mutants, and a Sun God from Smallville Can Teach Us about Being Human

Grant Morrison's written some of the most astonishing, moving comics of the past 20 years: Seven Soldiers, Seaguy, We3, The Filth. Supergods is his romp through the history of superhero comic books, and while his politics are a little naive, his well-written and -researched comments about how these heroes reflect on the vast societal changes in the 20th century are thought-provoking. Of special interest to me was the latter half of the book where he discusses his own creations. This one's a keeper.

The Occupation: War and Resistance in Iraq

Stunning. As the Cheney/Bush regime's lies continue to be exposed, read this for one of the earlier reports from the so-called "reality-based community." Yes, I know it wasn't published in 2010, but that's when I read it. Too bad Obama doesn't have the guts to prosecute these war criminals that "ran" the country for 8 years.
