Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Montana Noir

Even though there were a few stories that I didn't love every bit of, and one I just didn't like (Downtown Billings, looking at you, but maybe I'm missing something), I still LOVED this collection. It is such a RELIEF to read a book that really makes an effort to get Montana right. Sure we have cowboys and all that, but we're just as varied here as many other places. It's hard to pick a favorite, but maybe Debra Magpie Earling's Polson-set story is it. The pacing, the details, all of it: perfection. Other highlights include David Abrams, Caroline Patterson, Eric Heidle, Keir Graff, Jamie Ford, and Janet Skeslien Charles' stories. Also, if you get a chance to see Yvonne Seng read aloud, do so, because that woman's voice is magnificent. Full disclosure: I do know some of the authors personally, but we're a state of only a million people. It would be weird if I didn't

Beautiful Ruins

Easily, EASILY the best book I read in 2012. It is perfect, and I do not say that lightly. I've loved everything I've read by Jess Walter, but this one I somehow managed to love even more. It's one of those books I want to shove into the hands of everyone. In fact, if someone said they didn't like this book, I might be suspicious of them in general.

This book is absolutely perfect, and if you read any review that claims otherwise, then that reviewer is trying too hard to be a smug killjoy and they should not be trusted. You should perhaps ask them if they also enjoy popping children's balloons and talking on their phone during movies because only a jerk would hate on this book. In Sara-parlance: I wanted to hug this book's face off. Am I full of hyperbole? Read the book and you tell me.

This is an outstanding book, one I've been telling everyone to read. Simon Van Booy has created a lovely, heartbreaking novel that was easily my favorite book of the past year.

Andy Warhols Colors

I bought this book for my son when he was around 6 months old and he has loved it ever since. He's 4 now, and this book has contributed to his interest in art, to the point where he said that the Warhol self-portrait in the SFMOMA was his favorite. He loves bright colors and animals (especially fish, which are featured here), and I love that this is a different take on the usual color-related board books for small children.
