Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

State of Wonder
by
Patchett, Ann
Anne Pardington
, January 09, 2012
One can always expect a book by Ann Patchett to be especially enjoyable, and this one is even entrancing, with a combination of science, adventure, and love supported by what must have been extensive research.

Musicophilia: Tales of Music and the Brain
by
Sacks, Oliver
Anne Pardington
, September 01, 2011
I have always been fascinated by the insights of Oliver Sacks, and this book was most meaningful because I have a hearing loss and have never been able to carry a tune. I didn't follow all the info about the brain, but now I know my problem is related to the loss. I was especially delighted, again, by his writing style, and by the real life stories of people affected by music, even if they had lost the ability to speak.

My Reading Life
by
Pat Conroy
Anne Pardington
, November 26, 2010
It should be no surprise that a writer as excellent aind enjoyable as Pat Conroy would have an equally rich reading life. He intertwines his literary discoveries with his encounters and assessments of all of his favorite authors, and sharing how he developed in his life through the process. I learned more about War and Peace from this book than I ever knew, and if anyone could have tempted me to read it, he could. But I will just rest with what he taught me.
