Monsters of Templeton
by
Lauren Groff
Laura B
, August 04, 2012
Lauren Groff’s The Monsters of Templeton is the engaging, funny, and whimsical story of a young woman trying to navigate the unexpected challenges life has thrown at her. Mixed into the narrative is a fevered quest for family origins which produces moments of scandal, secret identities, and truly magical occurrences. Anchored throughout the story is the mystery surrounding the monster of Templeton, who lives in the lake at the edge of town. Groff’s novel is enticing at every turn, and you’ll be hard-pressed to set this book down once you’ve opened it. Full of magical realism, lively characters, and a tongue in cheek spin on American literary tradition, The Monsters of Templeton is a wonderful read.

Help
by
Kathryn Stockett
Laura B
, January 01, 2012
Kathryn Stockett's novel, The Help, is intriguing on so many levels. The characters are genuine and engaging, the storyline is heart-wrenching and exciting, and the writing is lyrical and page turning. The themes and emotional turmoil portrayed in the not-that-distant setting of pre Civil Rights era Mississippi are still compelling and relevant in today's society. A great pick for an avid bibliophile or someone just looking for a great read, The Help is simply one of the best books around!

The characters and storyline of Little Bee are hypnotic and riveting from the first sentence. Chris Cleave has a masterful control on the narration and emotions of his characters and each of their stories urge you to keep reading. You won't be able to put this book down once you've started!
