Berinfell Prophecies 01 Curse of the Spider King
by

This is the tale of seven young teens - each surprisingly talented - who discover almost too late that they are elf lords from another world. The evil Spider King wants nothing more than to eradicate the race of elves, so he sends his menacing Drefid assassins to track down and kill the seven elf lords, who are the key to their race's survival. Suddenly the seven, drawn from their homes in different parts of the world, are running from a force they didn't even know existed. Curse of the Spider King was a book I was anxious to read. Unfortunately, I came away disappointed from the work of one of my favorite authors, Wayne Batson, which is not something I would have expected to do. I have to say I've never read any of Hopper's work, to be fair, but overall I found the story lacking. The characters and story are somewhat underdeveloped, and the feeling was insensitive. Much better, I think, would have been to pare down the number of elven lords and elaborate more. I have to say I was disappointed with the flat characters. Overall, it seemed a rather stereotypical fantasy for young adults, but it was clean and would certainly be exciting for younger kids to read on their own. In spite of all that, the cliffhanger at the end will definitely be a reason for me to read Venom and Song, scheduled to be released this spring.

Door Within 03 Final Storm

I could not wait to get my hands on this book after reading the first two. From the beginning, the story catapults towards the climax of the saga - when Aidan, Antoinette, and Robby will have to face Paragor himself. Overall, the book was an excellent final installment of the Door Within trilogy, but what disappointed me was the somewhat insensitivity of the very end. At the very point of the climax, the point of view changes from the comfortable and engaging third person limited to third person omniscient, and from then on it becomes somewhat unrealistic. I do have to say I was disappointed with the way this otherwise excellent trilogy ended, but I would still recommend it to any fantasy fan.

Door Within 02 Rise Of The Wyrm Lord

This anxiously awaited second installment of the Door Within trilogy just heightens the tension and raises the stakes in anticipation of the last book of the trilogy. The threads are woven tighter and the story builds as the Wyrm Lord spreads its wings over Alleble. A good character addition is Aidan's new friend, Antoinette, who fills in the female role where the less present Gwenne was, and the story focuses more on Antoinette and Alec's adventures in the Realm. All in all, left me waiting for more. Thank goodness I had the last book of the trilogy waiting when I finished this one!

Door Within 01

Even though many of the elements of this book - travel to another dimension, dragons, castles, kings and knights - are common to many fantasy stories, the Door Within stands out from the crowd. This is a fantasy that is more than surface deep, with a realistic allegory woven into the story line that tells of the Biblical fall of Lucifer and Jesus' redemption, among other things. The story is believable, though the writing may perhaps be a little labored at times, and the story keeps you spellbound and screaming for more when you finish it. You will be missing a significant tale of the fantasy genre if you skip this book. I highly recommend it for kids and teens ten and up, and even adults will enjoy finding the connections between this fantasy and real history.

Isle Of Fire

This sequel to the adventure of Declan Ross picks up where Isle of Swords left off. This time around, the crew of "good" pirates are pitted once again not only against Bartholomew Thorne, who has made alliances with a powerful Viking tribe, but against a being called simply the Merchant - the epitome of evil, living hundreds of years but still mortal. Meanwhile, Cat battles against his own identity as Thorne's son and becomes captain of one of Ross' ships, with boisterous Anne as first mate. Together with Ross' memorable crew, the Dominican monks, and with a British naval captain thrown into the mix, the main characters battle to overcome the Merchant, all the while fending off Thorne and his deadly fire rain. Batson still manages to add hilarious comic relief amidst the intense naval battling and high-seas hijinks. The height of the story is Cat and Anne's almost deadly face-off with the Merchant in his conch-shell lair. A wonderful, satisfying sequel to the amazingly popular Isle of Swords.

This book sets itself apart from your everyday fantasies for young readers with its unique combination of real history and fantasy. Set in the Carribean islands during the height of the pirate era, the story incorporates real history and places, along with a thrilling and sometimes hilarious combination of fantastical elements and reality. The characters - Captain Declan Ross, his daughter Anne, Nubby, Red Eye, Stede, Cat, and the evil pirate Bartholomew Thorne - are memorable and realistic. Their mission - find the treasure of a secret order of Dominican monks before Thorne does. The result is a swashbuckling, rollicking pirate adventure worth the retelling - I would recommend this book to adults as well as kids and teens. A great read!
