Light Shadow & Skin Tone The Complete Guide to Shooting Black & White Glamour Photography Oth Digitally & on Film
by
Bill Lemon

I have a good amount of experience with drawing, so I understand the importance of tones and shading when creating images. The texture, the smoothness of the skin and the depth are dependant on the differences between tonal values. The importance of contrast and tone was brought up quickly by Bill Lemon, a famous nude glamour photographer and author of Light, Shadow & Skin Tone. Lemon quickly covered the essentials of black and white photography, the proper camera equipment, finding and communicating with the model, studio equipment and the location of the photo shoot. Given the visual nature of the topic, Lemon included several examples of his photos. The photos contained in Light were what you call artistic nudes. The photographs are very tastefully presented, though still very nude. However, those worried about seeing vulgar images can relax. Nothing about these images was provocative. After giving photographers the basics, Lemon showed example after example of photographs with different elements, different settings and different lighting. After each image, Lemon covered two or three areas of focus. Topics included clothing, expression, pose, communication, setting, shades of grey, black, etc. He also included the camera he used and the specifications. This type of organization felt very effective, allowing readers to see exactly what he was trying to teach them. Each section also includes a hint that provides added instruction to photographers. This format does not change throughout the course of this lengthy book. I would recommend this book to anyone involved in any form of visual arts. This book gives a lot of advice on tones and poses which can be helpful to anyone who wishes to create images of human subjects. Even if you are interested in photographing or drawing clothed figures, the anatomy of a subject must be understood before clothes can be realistically drawn on the figure. Also, this guide provides sound advice on choosing locations that can be beneficial to anyone working in a visual art medium.

The Six SIGMA Manual for Small and Medium Businesses: What You Need to Know Explained Simply
by
Baird, Craig

Six Sigma is an engaging book that guides readers into the world of Six Sigma. Many people, including myself, might not have any clue what Six Sigma is. The author of the guide seemed to realize that and was really helpful in explaining. Six Sigma is the idea that businesses can establish a great reputation and receive new business through word of mouth when their products or services have a very high percentage of perfect products or services. A Six Sigma percentage example that this guide gave was 99.9997%, which seems like an incredibly high percentage. Six Sigma promises to take you through the process of achieving these numbers using principles similar to the scientific method, which is called DMAIC. DMAIC stands for Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control. Through this process, businesses are able to find out what their company’s goals are, analyze how company processes can be improved and implementing these improvements. Six Sigma tries to convince you to use Six Sigma in the introduction before you are taken through the process of implementing it. This type of persuasiveness made me feel like I was reading a self-help book for my business. The book then pointed out what most involved with business are probably already aware of, which is that customer satisfaction is essential to the success of a business. This piece of information felt obvious, but still important to note since it is the foundation of Six Sigma. Six Sigma is a pleasure to read. The information is presented in an interesting manner and the author conveys a positive can-do mentality. Some of the information can be overwhelming to business novices, since the guide is working with the scope of large companies. However, the guide still manages to maintain a high level of clarity. Of course, knowing if Six Sigma actually works would require that I create a company or become an upper level management of that company. However, Six Sigma points out that many of the big-name companies such as Motorola and General Electric have implemented Six Sigma successfully and have benefited from it. However, this book is still for anyone who owns a business, even if this business is a small business. Six Sigma stated that if you have employees, you can implement Six Sigma and benefit from it. I can completely buy this notion, since small companies with poor customer satisfaction can quickly end up with no customers.

Nonprofit Management Everything You Need To Know About Managing Your Organization Explained Simply With Companion Cd Rom

Having started several groups in the past, though never non-profit organizations, and having been a member of several activist groups, I was excited to read a guide to starting and managing non-profit organizations. Frankly, I was not disappointed. Nonprofit Management is a very meticulous, thorough and clear guide to managing a non-profit organization. Without wasting any time, Nonprofit Management dives into the nitty-gritty details of running a non-profit organization. After giving some essential details on what a non-profit organization is, the author proceeded to give step-by-step details. If this guide were any more actionable, I’d think I was reading a cookbook. This book covers how to set up a non-profit board, how to elect members to the board and what you should expect from these members. The guide gives you the essential legal information that you must know including how you can get free legal consultation for your organization. The infrastructure section not only gave you important information on topics such as branding, but also gave you a sense of how others might view your non-profit organization. The “Getting Your Message Out” chapter is one that especially must be read, since spreading information is often the central goal of non-profit organizations. Based on the little bit of marketing I’ve done for my own website, I agree that any group can benefit from learning as much about marketing as possible. This marketing includes not only raising awareness but also doing research into what is actually needed in the world outside your non-profit organization. The marketing section also hammered home the message that seems to be repeated throughout the book: “know your audience.” Nonprofit Management is sprinkled in case studies and anecdotes from seasoned non-profit starters, giving this guide more credibility. Another thing to say about Nonprofit Management was that it was very comprehensive. Just take a look at the sprawling table of contents to get an idea of how packed with information this guide is. Far too many books feel like a gloss over of a particular subject, which leaves you worried afterwards that you will have to read another book to get the information you need. Nonprofit Management, however, can very easily serve as your only playbook when running your non-profit organization.
