Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Deafening
by

Wow. This book is stunning. Itani, a Canadian author, is absolutely amazing. I borrowed this book from a friend and have since purchased and devoured all of Itani's books. Her language is so incredibly rich and her stories so intimate and alive. This book truly brought the silence of deafness to life and wrapped it around me as I read the book. I still wear it is a coat. The characters, history, and place of this story are so intense that you find yourself lost when you finish the book because where you have gone and what you have experienced is so real. If you have not read Itani before you MUST read this book. A Canadian treasure to be sure!

This book, is by far my favorite read for 2012! So many of the images and tales return to me again, and again even months after reading Madame Millie! A treasure of a book, as well as a treasure of a person.

Millie is a national treasure. Yes, she was a prostitute. Yes, she probably swindled lots of folks outta some serious dough. But her heart was bigger than the New Mexico sky! Her adventures read like a Hollywood blockbuster. Her figures of speech will have you rolling on the ground. Written by one of the greatest American authors, Max Evans, this book is hard to put down. And it'll stay with ya. This book is absolutely fantastic, and if you are a fan of Western American history, should be required reading.

Inspiring and insipid, the heroine (can you call her that?) of the book makes you laugh, and groan. Her journey with 10 year old Ian, however, leaves you rooting for both of them. And her denouement for the issue underlying her quest leaves you smiling (and feeling like there just isn't enough time to read great books!!!!). A fun read which could not be put down. Definitely my favorite book published in 2011.

Big Year A Tale of Man Nature & Fowl Obsession

A bird watching page turner? Seriously? Yup! An intimate look at three fellows who were going after a "Big Year" record. They all broke records, but only one came in first. Their personal stories and the look at the bird culture will have you hooting and twittering as you fly through this book. Nyuk, nyuk. Will give you a whole new appreciation for all those LGB and LBBs you see at your feeder! You never know, you might need to send out an alert... then watch the real show begin. Oh yes, and long live Mr. Pants!!!

House Made Of Dawn
by
N Scott Momaday

Dog-eared and haunting, this book sits on my shelf falling apart. I pull it out every few years and reread it. It is a deeply moving, literary feast of a book. Not only are the characters ones that will lodge in your brain and sneak into your subconscious and conscious but the landscape will fill your minds-eye as you gaze out on a quiet moment. Lucky enough to live in the land that hosts this story it feels even more personal. To walk in the valleys where the characters roamed is a blessing. To wrap this story around you again and again is like falling into a soft blanket and sleeping a sound sleep as you mull over the mysteries of the world. N. Scott Momaday is a national treasure. Read this book and you will agree.

This is one of those books that sticks with you. An improbable tale of a young mother starting over after tragedy. She has a lot of luck, but a lot of spunk too. It's a great snuggle up book to read during a cold winter's night. You'll have a hankering for fish pie; want to cast some luscious wool onto your needles; and keep thinking back to Jo and her compatriots, with a smile in your minds eye, for weeks afterward.
