Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Honey & Clover Volume 1

This book is not just another shojo! It touches on several different thoughts of very different complex characters. It has all the awkward silences of friendship and love. I cursed every heart-wrenching scene because I felt like every rejection and every sorry was happening to me personally. It's just like any other person's life (college students especially), it has its ups and downs. If you want something that's deep, but still entertaining, and won't make you depressed for all of eternity, read Honey and Clover! It is a unique story about how some people are brilliant artists, and about how some people just aren't... But that's ok.

Darkly Dreaming Dexter Dexter 01

A serial killer who kills murderers...What else could you want in a book? This character is scary real as a smart monster who knows that the best disguise is to have a normal life by day. The most horrific part of all of is how much you begin to care for the character and root for him as he eludes police suspicions. You tend to hope that he'll never stop as he rids Miami of all of its underbelly scum. I found him strangely relate-able as he went through his work day, faking many emotions and running through all of the social cues.

Ramen King & I How the Inventor of Instant Noodles Fixed My Love Life
by
Andy Raskin

, May 01, 2010
When you put the book down, it makes you want to grab a pencil and paper and start scribbling down... "Dear Momofuku," Many strange events happen when Andy Raskin surrenders himself to the inventor of ramen as his God stand-in. As a person who, before, had close to nothing to do with ramen, he suddenly finds himself constantly stumbling into ramen-related adventures and realizes that these aren't coincidences, this is His will, the God of Ramen's will. Andy's love life is in shambles and he is in a state of fear where his inner voice constantly scolds him. "What's wrong with you?" it asks. "You will never be in in a healthy relationship," it goes. But with the noodle-man in mind, he conquers himself while trying to understand his heart's true desires.

Missing Piece Meets the Big O 25th Anniversary Edition
by
Shel Silverstein
Holly Jones
, March 14, 2010
My favorite book of all time. I'm not going to lie. The first time I read it, I cried. As an adult, I didn't expect this simple child's book to have such a strong effect on me. Even though the main characters are a triangle and a circle, Silverstein's amazing ability to capture the imagination through her story telling really brings the pages to life. It's an important lesson kids and grown-ups alike must learn. Almost like a flash into the dating world, it shows a pour triangle looking for its significant other to complete it, so that it may go places. It's a wild adventure where other missing pieces are constantly coming in and out of the Missing Piece's life, but none seem to make it happy. Until the Big O comes along and teaches the small triangle that it can't go through life as a missing piece, waiting for someone else to make it happy...
