Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

And Tango Makes Three

This book is ridiculous. In reality, the penguin, Silo, has a female mate named Scrappy. I read that gay activists wanted to isolate the male penguins and keep the zoo keepers from introducing them to females. But as soon as they did, guess what? Nature took over. And male went with female.

This is a good book for young children because they can actually feel the bear's fur. It's a cute story that keeps their attention.

Its Perfectly Normal

I saw this book on display in my college library. It was in the children's section that is open to the public. I couldn't even read half of it because I was so embarrassed and uncomfortable. This book is not the right way to teach your kids about the birds and the bees. It shouldn't even be read by adults! It perverts the beauty of sexuality and talks about things that kids don't even need to know. I would consider it a pornographic book. Anyone who reads this book to children should go to jail for child abuse. This book will poison young (and old) minds.

If You Give A Cat A Cupcake

My experience with this series has always been good. This one is my favorite. I used it in a nursery rhyme unit to go with Pat-A-Cake. The children wanted me to read it more than once. It's short, but sweet.

I was introduced to this book in a children's literature class. I would never read this to children (or anyone) because it promotes homosexuality. Children would be very confused after listening to this book. It's just not right.

The Boy Who Cried Fabulous
by

I was given this book in my student teaching placement to use as an introduction to adjectives because there are so many adjectives used in the book. When I first looked at it, I thought the word, "fabulous" sounded a little gay, but "fabulous" isn't a "gay" word in itself. I didn't think much of it until I looked it up online and saw that some people say it's a book for gay boys. I was disgusted. I am reading this book to first grade girls and boys in couple days. I don't want them to have gay tendencies! I'm sure they won't even realize it because they are so innocent, but when I read it, I will make sure I focus on the adjectives, not the queeny boy. I just think it's a shame they make books with hidden gay messages. Well, hopefully, the kids won't even notice...I wish I didn't have to read this book.
