Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail by local Portland author Cheryl Strayed is an exquisite memoir of love between a mother and daughter and my favorite book of 2012! If I could pitch a tent and live in a book this would be the one. Cheryl held amazing courage conquering the trail, fear and her ultimate reality- life without her mother physically present. Her story is unabashadly honest and heartfelt; I feel very honored to have experienced this story, it will remain one of my favorite memoirs ever.

Room

Room is a captivating novel by: Emma Donoghue that captured my attention from the first page. Told from the perspective of five year old Jack, the comments and opinions of this unlikely protagonist are very insightful. At times, you feel like you're hearing an adult speak and at other times, the childlike mentality comes through, a good balance of both. His feelings about escaping the room in which he lives are very poignant. He can't imagine life outside of what he knows and when it comes down to it, I believe everyone can relate to this idea. Being uncertain of the outcomes of our choices but like Jack saving his mom, having the courage to strike out and take a leap of faith is a universal experience. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it!

Life Without Limits Inspiration for a Ridiculously Good Life

I believe that the only disability in life is a bad attitude and that lack of imagination is perhaps the most detrimental obstacle. As a person with Cerebral Palsy who uses a walker to facilitate mobility, I have a personal passion to make the world universally accessible through innovation and design. I believe that Nick's memoir offers a unique first-person account of the able-bodied world and how those of us with differences navigate and shine in our environments. Nick is able to share his passion for life and the divine as he connects with all people in a cohesive manner, understanding their circumstances and meeting their concerns with a level of sensitivity found only in those who have traveled similar paths. Nick's greatest desire to take his personal experiences and use them to the benefit of others by helping to facilitate growth in public awareness and acceptance of the differently able leaps off the page and is fulfilled in this great work. In closing, the people who experience challenges first hand are often the ones who bring the greatest innovation and change to such issues. I believe that Nick's personal struggles and triumphs have prepared him to reach all the people of the world, helping each individual to reach their fullest potential. Thank you Nick for providing all of us with the insight to help celebrate uniqueness and the tools to provide the next generation with a world that embraces curiosity and acceptance, not fear.
