I just finished this beautiful book last night, a novel in which everything is TRUE. The book has gotten a lot of comment relating to the issues it addresses - race, religion, the cultural expectations placed on women - and while these were expertly woven through the whole story, essential but never hammered at, it was the TRUTH of the characters that I found so moving. Her characters are so fully made, so human. Not always making decisions that will make them happy, not always "likable." People who are trying to find themselves, longing for or running from connection. And the story always felt real, honest. No manufactured plot devices, no overblown drama-for-drama's-sake. It ran along like life does - and, like life, I had no idea how it would end until the very last page. I really loved it.

The Small Backs of Children
by
Lidia Yuknavitch

This is sure to be what we call an "important work", a classic. Yuknavitch is - always has been, always will be - an absolutely FEARLESS writer. Fearless with language, fearless with structure, fearless in her exploration of the totality of human sensation, in all its ugliness and beauty. And her great field of creation has always been the female body. In this latest work, she's broken through - structurally, conceptually, thematically - to create an absolutely original novel; these pages emerge FROM the bodies of girls and women. In doing so, she's created a new literary from, I believe, a new terrain. This is a great work.

Wanderer An Autobiography
by
Sterling Hayden

This is simply a brilliant book. No "movie star bio" at all, this is a work of art. Hayden is a fearless writer, making bold shifts in time and tense and POV. His language is wildly poetic. And he's incredibly frank and searching and compassionate. If anyone had told me that I'd love a book that was centered around ocean sailing, I'd say they were insane. But this is a book I treasure. Period.
