Little House 06 Long Winter
by
Laura Ingalls Wilder

Though this book was not written for my age demographic, I found it compelling. Set in South Dakota in the last part of the 19th century, this story is a surprisingly moving account of a community pulling together to survive a severe winter. Both the compassionate and self-centered aspects of human nature are presented providing great discussion points. After reading this book I made a promise never to complain about the NW weather again.

Fall of Giants Century Trilogy 01
by
Ken Follett

When it comes to dramatizing history, no one does it better than Ken Follett. With no less than a dozen main characters spread across the globe, Follett pulls off the amazing feat of making each character's storyline as compelling as the next. Whether it's the poor Russian peasant dreaming of life in America, the idealistic young American aid to a President on the brink of war, the beautiful English house servant in love with her master, or the good-hearted German Baron torn between conscience and country, the drama in their personal lives beautifully reflects the drama unfolding in the world around them. If you're looking for a dry, sober account of the events that lead to the first and second world wars with no humanistic take whatsoever... buy yourself a history book. But if you want an informative, romantic and engrossing epic that truly makes you feel what it was like to have lived through the events that would define the 20th century, than this is the book for you.
