The Lake of Dead Languages
by
Carol Goodman

This book has been compared by critics to Donna Tart’s Secret History but I think it is so much better. The premise is pretty straight forward as far as mysteries go, a woman comes back to teach at a school where she has a dark and troubled past that she is forced to face. What makes this book really stand out for me is Goodman’s writing. It is engrossing and has a wonderful flow which made it very easy for me to devour this book in only a few sittings.

Last Kingdom Saxon Chronicles 01
by
Bernard Cornwell

I am a huge fan of historical fiction and Bernard Cornwell is one of my favorite authors in the genre. The Saxon Chronicles are narrated by Uhtred, an imperfect hero whose split allegiance makes for a fascinating read. I like that there’s a little bit of everything in the series, bloody and gruesome battle scenes, treachery and deceit, love, family, honor and the story of (the future King) Alfred trying to unite the English and fend off the invading Danes.

Terrific illustrations and a funny plot make this one of my all time favorite books from childhood. A little boy who lives on the upper floor of an apartment building is told not to jump on the bed, when he doesn't listen his floor comes crashing down onto his neighbor's heads. I get this for all my neices, nephews and friend's kids and it has quickly become a favorite of their families as well.

John Hart is a master of weaving multiple stories into 1 fascinating and twisted tale and his third book is no exception. Johnny, convinced finding his abducted sister will fix his shattered family, constantly puts himself into harms way to unravel the mystery.

King Of Lies

John Hart

This book is at once a murder mystery, dysfunctional family saga and a story about finding redemption and your own path in life. At times I had a really hard time with the main character, some of his decisions are absolutely enraging but Hart’s writing is engrossing and kept me mesmerized throughout. With each twist and turn I had no idea where the story was going but I was happy to be along for the ride.

Palace of Illusions

Chitra B Divakaruni

I don’t know anything about the traditional version of the Mahabharat but despite that I found Divakaruni’s retelling through the eyes of the main female character, Panchaali, very interesting and easy to get into. I love the way Divakaruni takes you through Panchaali’s life and how she introduces and develops the various characters; she doesn’t rely on readers already knowing the story, which really helps The Palace of Illusions stand on it’s own.
