Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Reading this book, like all Marilyn Robinson's books, is like drinking a fine wine- let the words linger on your palette and savor the nuances. The depth of her characters imbued with the richness of her prose creates a heady bouquet that lingers in your dreams.

Now here's a book you can raise a drink to. Written with humor and panache, you can learn the history and social surroundings of home made liquor. And you can even make some yourself- if you have the gumption!

Wisdom of Menopause
by
Christiane Northrup

This should be in every woman's library, not just those going through menopause. It is full of great information on how a woman's body and mind works throughout the aging process, what hormones we have and what ones we may or may not need. It also has resources for physicians and pharmacies that can provide the services that every woman needs.

Household Saints

Francine Prose

This is an enchanting book about faith and family. The rich prose and engaging characters transport you to a time long gone, but is still relevant to today's issues of belief, personal relationships and destiny.

Player Piano

Kurt Vonnegut

Life imitates art. We are fast becoming a society of displaced workers- displaced not only by machines but also by the outsourcing of our jobs. In true Vonnegut style, even his first book is a relevant as ever. It is a must-read for anyone who is entering the business world, works in it or has retired from it.

Housekeeping
by
Marilynne Robinson

Marilynne Robinson's "Housekeeping" should be savored like fine wine- drink it in slowly to appreciate the nuances. Like all other prose-poetry, it not just about the story, it is also about the language that tells the story. This fine little book is filled with rich images and bone-achingly sad lives that are filled with possibilities.

I Like You Hospitality Under the Influence
by
Sedaris, Amy

, December 10, 2008
With humor, style and wit, Amy guides us through the ins and outs of hosting the un-hostable. I laughed myself silly and then fixed some fabulous meals using her recipes. From the simple (Whiskey Dick's Baked Chicken) to the sublime (coconut cream pie) to the witty (How do you remove a wine stain? You don't. Boil your garment in a pot of hot chopped beets and water)you just gotta love this woman!
