This story is written by the main character's real-life granddaughter. It ranges from the humorous to the horrific, all well told and difficult to put down.

A wonderful story, could be true, of an era not that long ago.

Distant Bugles, Distant Drums: The Union Response to the Confederate Invasion of New Mexico
by
Flint Whitlock

Since learning my great grandfather fought in the Civil War in New Mexico, I have investigated available books on the subject. This book is by far the most complete coverage of the subject, including background information on the key players. I visited the site of the deciding engagement, the Battle at Glorieta Pass, which took place in a narrow canyon at the western end of the Santa Fe Trail. Many of the combatants on each side were civilians pulled into the conflict with little, if any training, wearing their own clothes and using their own assortment weapons brought from home. Although the Confederates actually won the battles, mistakes and poor logistics on their part as well as luck and brazenness on the part of the Union forces, brought them to a bitter defeat. This Western Campaign, though little known to many Civil War buffs, was unique in many ways and played an important part in the history of New Mexico and the SW. Reenactments are being planned for the 150th Anniversary of the Battle at Glorieta Pass next year. This book is an excellent read and I recommend it to anyone interested in the history of the western United States, New Mexico, or the Civil War.
