Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Sisters Eight 03 Georgias Greatness

Georgia's power is even cooler than Durinda's. If you have no clue whatsoever as to what I'm talking about, then, well, stop trying to skip books! You'll be missing out, I tell ya. So anyway, without spoiling Georgia's power, I will give you a little hint (three, actually). 1)Mrs. McGillicudy has disappeared, and the Eights' subsitute teacher is so beautiful until they realize she's evil. 2)The subsitute teacher is a lady who they'll meet again, eventually, in another book. (I'm not gonna tell you which book! Ha ha ha! Now you'll be restless until you read all the other books to find out which book!) 3)Georgia uses her power to scare the evil subsitute teacher out of her wits, because of the crime Evil Subsitute Teacher has committed and the direct relation it has to the Eights. (Yeah, and something else you can't weasel out of me is the subsitute teacher's name! You'll have to read the book to find out!) HAPPY READING!!!!!!!!

Man Who Counted A Collection of Mathematical Adventures

Hi, just want to share some of my insight and how much I love this book. I got it for my 10th birthday. Although, this book does have some downsides like I would not consider it for someone under the age of 9 to read by themselves as it is a rather long book and little kids would not appreciate the fine literature. This is great stuff you're getting, not just some Junie B. Jones or Magic Treehouse. Even adults say so! Even then, there are parts that kids probably won't understand as it does take place in Baghdad, and Beremiz is Persian. And the language-- fine language(nothing inappropriate) but, again: This takes place a long, long, time ago, in the 14th century. So just don't be alarmed and think your child can't read if they come running to you saying, "I don't understand this." Another heads-up is that there is a lot of religion in this book. I would recommend this to 11+, ir an exceptionally bright 10 year old.

Sisters Eight 02 Durindas Dangers

Durinda's Dangers, the second book in the Sisters 8 series, is just as great as the first, Annie's Adventures. However, as this is a series , I would recommend you start from the first book and work your way up, as you probably would get lost in about the first or so chapters if you skipped the first one. If you think it's going to be boring, think again! Durinda has a really special power. I'm not going to say what it is, but let's just say you can use it for selfish purposes, which is what her cat does. Dandruff, with her power, steals all the other cats' food. All right, enough blabbing. I hope your curiosity is piqued! Go get your hands on a copy of this book!

Number The Stars

My favorite quote of the whole entire book is during the long night of the Jewish New Year in Annemarie's Copenhagen apartment when the Nazi officers came to look for the Rosens. "Ellen's hands flew to her neck. Desperately she began trying to unhook the tiny clasp.Outside bedroom door, the harsh voices and heavy footsteps continued....'Hold still,' Annemarie commanded. 'This will hurt.'She grabbed the little gold chain, yanked with all her strength, and broke it.... Terrified, both girls looked up at the three Nazi officers who entered the room." I actually did a book report on Number the Stars and I loved the book. For my project, I came up with an entirely different ending. In my version, Annemarie dies and when Ellen comes back, she finds in Annemarie's diary a heartbreaking piece about good old times, when Annemarie's older sister Lise was still alive and when her younger sister, Kirsti, could have all the pink frosted yellow cupcakes she wanted. I LOVE THIS BOOK! YOU SHOULD BUY IT! I AM NOT SOMEONE FROM POWELL'S OR ASSOCIATED WITH THIS BOOK IN ANY WAY AND TRYING TO SELL IT TO YOU. IT REALLY IS AWESOME!
