Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

A Great Reckoning: Chief Inspector Gamache 12
by
Louise Penny
Kathryn LePage
, September 19, 2016
The latest tantalizing mystery from Louise Penny places Armand Gamache is a seemingly hopeless situation when he decides to take on the headship of the Surete Academy. While his motives are exemplary--clear up and clear out what is being taught young police cadets that seems to be making them more brutal and corruptible--some of his choices seem puzzling if not downright dangerous. There are really several mysteries within the mystery, and the cast of characters we have come to know and often love in Three Pines provide us with not only a framework but a sanctuary from which to seek the answers. A powerful book on many levels, I think it is one of her best.

Calligraphers Daughter

I picked this up at Powell's sale shelf last time I was in Portland. At times slow-moving and seemingly overly descriptive, I came to realize there were reasons for these qualities in the book. A mystery, a love story, a coming-of-age story for a young girl in Korea ahead of her time, an important lesson in Korean history, customs, class systems--this is a powerhouse of a book. A long and satisfying dinner.

Rarely have I read book that has stayed with me as this one has. The characters, the unflinchable issues, the tension created by the timing of the plot line all came together to make it one of the most unforgettable books I have read.
