Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

This book weaves a tale that had me crying, smiling, wanting to stop reading because of the painful stories but wanting to keep reading to the end and then start all over again. I will read it again from cover to cover and give it as gifts to family and friends.

I started reading this book to my three children. We were all laughing out loud! They picked it up and finished it and then got the next two in the series and read those on their own. Yesterday they chose it to give as a birthday gift to a friend. I love when I read the beginning of books and they want to read the rest themselves!

You will think and talk about and recommend this book long after finishing it. It reads like a novel-- a personal story about a mom, a daughter and a family, while at the same time touches directly on every living being human or animal. It is thought provoking, anger inducing, and awe inspiring. It raises issues that I didn't know existed and really have no right answers. Thank you Powells for turning me on to this book.

I grew up finding the "Nina's" in the Sunday New York Times. Now my daughter loves finding the Nina's in her book of Hirschfeld drawings. I am thrilled to pass my love of Hirshfeld's art down to my children and their friends.

This was a favorite book as a child. Now my children love it too. It is a refreshing book because it doesn't have any "scary" parts. It sends a nice message about love not being about who is the prettiest or most talented. It is a classic that all Moms should discover.
