Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)

It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

This is the second installment of what I hope will be a long series about Nora Khalil, FBI agent. She is the daughter of a protective Egyptian father who has a hard time accepting her career choice. This time she has left Philadelphia for Erie, PA. A domestic terrorist situation is forming and people are dying. I don't want to say more so as not to give anything away. It is fast-paced thriller and I read in 2 days . It does seem to be ripped from the headlines and explanation of mindset reflects current political situation. I highly recommend.

This book is set in Arctic region of Canada and focus are the Inuit people and more precisely, Edie Kiglatuk. Edie's dream is to send her step son to nursing school and put him on the path to establishing native care givers in this part of the world. A murder foils her plans and she sets out to solve it with her hunter's skills and tenacity. This is an area I know little about and it takes skill to live with the dark part of year and extreme cold. Edie is a survivor and I look forward to the next in what I hope will be a long series.

Hook Runyon is an employee of the railroad who lost his arm in a car accident. He lives in a caboose and his best friend is a moonshiner. Great chance to peek into life during and after WWII.
