Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Barry Lopez surprises, surpasses, and excels. I long bemoaned the impossibility of ever again reading the first hundred pages of Arctic Dreams for the first time. This current creation offers another deep exploration, and I savored every page. Written with respect and purpose for his readers, Lopez returns and generously shares observations and experiences, willing us present in remote locations and times. His rich vocabulary increases in intensity where additional attention is appropriate, alerting readers, sharing particular perceptions. This delicate mixture defies definition, sweeps through disciplines, and offers delights , mindful of the current day's deep demands and challenges. Lopez gracefully shares reflections hard-won during his vast life's work and its uncommon associations, opportunities, and insights. I am glad I got to witness this Oregon-based writer early in his career and have not been disappointed in following him since.

Prizes: Selected Short Stories
by
Frame, Janet
borealight

Janet Frame was required reading in New Zealand high schools when I was there and virtually unknown in the U.S. Such is the case of different hemispheres. Her writing emulates Shakespeare and gives it a twist. Her writing remains pertinent and carefully crafted by today's standards, though she was one of the first novelists to include references to herself in her writing. This book of beautiful short stories presents perspectives on common, ordinary themes; illuminations on unspoken "elephants in the room"; and reflections in metaphorical messages. I found them delightful and enjoyed taking them in doses of one or two a day, a pleasant re-treat for a few minutes' time.
