Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Starlighter
by

As a huge fan of Bryan Davis' Dragons in Our Midst/Oracles of Fire series and the Echoes from the Edge trilogy (I spend more time on his forum then on Facebook), I eagerly anticipated the release of Starlighter. One aspect of the story that will immediately surprise readers of DioM is the presence of inherently evil dragons. But instead of traditional treasure-hording, maiden-devouring beasts, the dragons of Starlight enslave humans to mine extane, a gas necessary for dragons to breath. Meanwhile, on another planet, stories of the "Lost Ones" who were stolen by dragons and taken to another planet are laughed at as myths, but the young swordsman Jason Masters is forced to make a difficult decision when he discovers the legends are true.

Masters & Slayers
by
Bryan Davis
Galadriel II

Masters and Slayers stands leagues above clichéd stereotypes with well-formed characters, a tightly woven plot, and heart-rending decisions. Can Jason's brother Adrian Masters trust the mysterious phantom of Cassabrie? Will Marcelle's bold moves compromise attempts to bring the Lost Ones home? Whose side is Arxad really on?

Oracles of Fire 04 Bones Of Makaidos
by
Bryan Davis

Eight books. Over a million words. It comes down to this: The Bones of Makiados, the final novel of the Dragons in our Midst/ Oracles of Fire series. As Hades and Earth unleash their fury on Second Eden, the stakes have never been higher. Our friends have grown since we first met Billy setting off the sprinklers in the boy’s restroom in Raising Dragons, but can they handle the sacrifices required to bring new life?

Oracles Of Fire 01 Eye Of The Oracle
by
Bryan Davis
Galadriel II

If Dragons in Our Midst was a movie, Eye of the Oracle would be the behind-the-scenes documentary. It goes deeper into the past and seamlessly weaves older threads into the background of the modern world. I recommend reading this book after Dragons in Our Midst because some parts might be considered spoilers.

Dragons In Our Midst 01 Raising Dragons
by
Bryan Davis

Raising Dragons opens a door to a corner of our own world we always wondered about and fills it with surprises and danger. Billy Banister is a typical preteen boy with a unique problem—he breathes fire! When he discovers the truth behind his dad’s past, he is thrown into a world of danger, intrigue and excitement. The first of an eight-book set (Dragons in Our Midst and Oracles of Fire), Raising Dragons introduces you to characters you’ll never want to leave.

I Know Why the Angels Dance
by
Davis, Bryan
Galadriel II
, October 13, 2010
I Know Why the Angels Dance is modern realistic fiction by Bryan Davis. Readers of his other novels will find the same passion flowing through the story of two families, two daughters, and the response of faith to tragedy. While I normally prefer fantasy novels, this book held me enthralled with the relatable characters and hard-hitting questions. The back cover asks “What happens when the darkness of unspeakable tragedy collides with the infinite glory of heaven?” Something beautiful and glorious, as this book relates.
