Behind the Beautiful Forevers

Behind the Beautiful Forevers is a nonfiction account that is as spellbinding as the most imaginative novel. Beware, its depiction of a desperately poor community in Mumbai might break your heart. On the other hand, it might heighten your awareness of conditions that make it possible for people of privilege (e.g., most Americans, including me) to live as we do. And perhaps it will prompt us to support efforts to reduce exploitation and to provide economic and educational opportunities for disadvantaged people here and abroad.

A heartbreaking work of staggering integrity -- the integrity of Deo, the young man whose story is told in this book; the integrity of the author, who tells the tale without intruding; the integrity of the decent people who help Deo survive and succeed.
