Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Artemis Fowl 01

The Artemis Fowl series is witty, high energy, and highly entertaining. They're easy to read (they are for a younger crowd) but very fun. The characters are lovable and regularly funny and the adventures are always full of action and surprises. The character development over the course of the series makes the books even harder to put down as you find yourself hoping for their safety and benefit in each situation. The first book in this series starts off the action right away and begins the characters growing on you like a super moss that just ate a vat of Miracle Grow. Highly recommended and it only gets better from here.

Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch
by
Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman

If you want a book that will make you laugh out loud while excitedly turning its pages; if you want to read something that provides deep thought while still provoking a child-like sense of innocence; if you want a story weaved from the minds of two brilliant authors who have obviously never stopped letting their imagination take over, read this book. With characters to fall in love with instantly, and enough twists in its plot to keep even the brightest interested, Good Omens pulls the reader in and grips them until the end. In the midst of the lighthearted hilarity, some heartwarming moments, and a few heart-racing ones as well, the intricate plot cleverly weaves itself together in ways impossible to predict. It is highly recommended for lovers of adventure, fun, and laughing until your cheeks hurt. Fans of Terry Pratchett will not be disappointed; however, it is excellent as an introduction to his writing as well. I’ve now read it three times and it is still one of my all time favorite books.
