Story as Sharp as a Knife The Classical Haida Mythtellers & Their World
by
Robert Bringhurst
Kurt Slipsager
, November 20, 2009
Entertaining and enlightening "A Story Sharp as a Knife" presents the story of a people at the edge of the world and the turn of the (19th) century linguist who managed to preserve a record of their rich oral literature. The world of Haida Gwaii is as unique and exotic as any in the world and the stories of its people are captivating. This book is full of examples of Haida poetry and is knit together in a thoughtful and engrossing fashion by Bringhurst's dedicated efforts.

Steep Approach To Garbadale
by
Iain Banks
Kurt Slipsager
, January 18, 2008
It's not easy to escape from a family as large, as wealthy and as eccentric as Alban's but he thinks he's managed it until the big Mercedes shows up at the kerb. Iain Banks' new novel is a story of corporate maneuvering, family politics and forbidden love set in a Hibernian countryside chilly enough to make you reach for the thermostat or, better yet, pour a wee dram to take the chill off. For those unfamiliar with the author, Banks fits somewhere on a continuum between Anthony Burgess and William Gibson, publishing both literary fiction (Complicity; The Wasp Factory) and, as Iain M. Banks, science fiction (Consider Phlebas, The Algebraist). This is solidly appealing fiction, Banks' best work in years (IMHO) and great winter reading.
